The Final Exhibition of Yuriko Takagi: Threads of Beauty
Starting tomorrow, March 10, 2026, Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya will host the highly anticipated exhibition,
Yuriko Takagi: Threads of Beauty 1995-2025. This exhibit will run until March 29 and marks Takagi's first solo exhibition in a Tokyo art museum. Notably, it will also be the last exhibition held in the current space before Bunkamura undergoes expansion and relocation. The event is free to enter and promises a dynamic showcase of Takagi's artistry.
Highlights of the Exhibition
1. A Global Journey through Eight Villages
This exhibition showcases approximately 100 works organized into eight distinct thematic 'Villages.' Each Village immerses visitors in the shared stories of cultures from 12 different countries, taking attendees on a visual journey reflecting Takagi’s extensive travel experiences. The exhibition's architectural design, orchestrated by Tsuyoshi Tane of ATTA, aims to excavate the 'memories' connected to the location, allowing viewers to experience an incredible blend of time and space.
2. A Nomadic Exploration with Dynamic Textiles
The installation employs large fabrics reminiscent of tents, derived from KONBU materials provided by Komatsu Materee Co., Ltd. Two unique types of fabric are featured, including mud-dyed cotton. The artworks are meticulously sewn onto these textiles, reflecting a commitment to craftsmanship. Furthermore, acrylic boxes and carpets used in the display have been repurposed from previous exhibitions, illustrating an environmental consciousness integrated into the exhibition's ethos.
3. A Farewell to a Historic Space
In a poignant tribute to the current exhibition space, movable walls have been removed, revealing once-concealed concrete walls and ductwork. This intentional unveiling provides visitors with a rare glimpse into the museum's unadulterated form, marking a significant moment in its ongoing narrative. The exhibit serves as a farewell to a space that has hosted countless renowned artworks, before Bunkamura's upcoming move to a new facility scheduled for completion in 2029.
4. Linking Contemporary Fashion and Artistic Expression
The exhibition is launched in parallel with the
Shibuya Fashion Week, creating a cultural confluence between art and fashion. As visitors navigate their way through Shibuya starting from Hachiko Square, they will encounter billboards and flags featuring Takagi’s photographic works. Additionally, a new video piece titled
Simultaneous Fashion: Shibuya x The Other Side, comprising images of people from pre-pandemic Shibuya, will make its debut towards the end of the exhibition. This piece aims to explore the continuous quest for identity and elegance, encouraging reflection on universal themes that transcend both time and geography.
