The 2026 Fortune 500 Europe Ranking: Volkswagen Leads Amidst Economic Growth

The 2026 Fortune 500 Europe Ranking

On September 16, 2026, Fortune released its prestigious Fortune 500 Europe list, which highlights the top-performing companies across the continent. This year's launch was marked with a ceremonial opening bell at the London Stock Exchange, signifying not just a ranking but a celebration of corporate achievements in Europe.

Volkswagen has successfully maintained its position at the top, reporting a revenue increase of 3% to $363 billion. This gain solidifies its lead over Shell, which, despite being in the second position, faced a 5% decrease in its revenue. The latest rankings illustrate a shift in corporate dominance, as for the first time in four years, Germany is not the leader in the number of companies listed. The United Kingdom now tops the chart with 76 companies, followed closely by Germany with 73 and France with 66.

The total revenue for companies in this year's Fortune 500 Europe list has reached an impressive $15.5 trillion, reflecting a 4% uptick from the previous year. This revenue equates to approximately half of the GDP of the region and accounts for 13% of the global GDP. Notably, profits also saw a recovery, climbing by 3% to just over $1 trillion after a decline the previous year. However, profit margins dipped again to 6.5%, down from a peak of 7.1% recorded in the 2024 rankings. The total workforce across these 500 firms fell by 1% to 34.6 million, leading to an increase in revenue per employee by 5% and profit per employee by 4%.

At the bottom of the list, the FMS Wertmanagement Group clocked in at $7.4 billion in revenue, marking the threshold for entry into the Fortune 500 Europe for the first time above the $7 billion mark. HSBC again led the profit rankings, amassing over $22 billion in 2025, joining a select group of only 25 companies to surpass the $10 billion profit mark.

Additionally, the representation of female leadership has reached new heights, with 43 female CEOs among the ranked companies—this is a notable achievement marking the highest number since the inception of the list in 2023. Women now lead approximately 8.6% of the listed firms, which, although a step forward, is still below the 11% seen within the US-based Fortune 500.

The current top ten companies in the 2026 Fortune 500 Europe List are as follows:

1. Volkswagen (Germany)
2. Shell (United Kingdom)
3. Glencore (Switzerland)
4. BP (United Kingdom)
5. TotalEnergies (France)
6. Stellantis (Netherlands)
7. BMW Group (Germany)
8. Mercedes-Benz Group (Germany)
9. Banco Santander (Spain)
10. BNP Paribas (France)

The finance sector dominates the rankings, representing 24% of the total revenue, 40% of profits, and employing 14% of the workforce across the listed firms. Together, the sectors of finance, energy, vehicles, and parts account for over half of both revenue and profits in the list, reinforcing their critical role in Europe's economy.

Shell’s CEO, Wael Sawan, commented on the changes, emphasizing their ambition to become the world's leading integrated energy company while striving to balance growth with a smooth energy transition. Grethe Schepers, Fortune's Lists Director for Europe, stated that the Fortune 500 Europe list serves as more than just a ranking; it’s a significant benchmark for the size and trends of European enterprises.

Furthermore, on the same day, executives from various companies gathered at the Fortune CEO Forum in London to discuss the list and explore growth opportunities across Europe. Representatives from notable firms like Anthropic, Ferrari, Mastercard, and Google participated in discussions moderated by editors from Fortune Magazine.

To be eligible for the Fortune 500 Europe list, companies are evaluated based on their total revenue from the most recent fiscal year, and all entrants are required to disclose financial data to a government authority. Methodological details on how the rankings are compiled can be found on Fortune’s website.

As Fortune continues to track and report on the largest and most influential companies globally, it continues to provide valuable insights into corporate performance and economic trends across industries.
