Robotic-Assisted Surgery: A New Era in Pancreatic Procedures at Okayama University
Robotic-Assisted Pancreatoduodenectomy at Okayama University
Okayama University Hospital, located in Okayama City, has made significant strides in the field of pancreatic surgery through the introduction of robotic-assisted techniques. Since the implementation of this advanced surgical method in September 2020, the hospital has successfully performed 162 robotic-assisted pancreatoduodenectomy surgeries (RAPD) as of December 2025, making it a pioneering institution in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. The leading research group, headed by Associate Professor Kosei Takagi from the Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, has recently published compelling evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of this procedure compared to traditional open surgery.
The backdrop to the introduction of robotic-assisted surgeries at Okayama University is the recognition of the potential advantages these technologies can offer. With the insurance coverage becoming available for robotic pancreatic surgery in April 2020, the university was well-positioned to lead in this innovative approach. The research's findings were published in the reputable journal,
