Factory Lab Partners with Major Thai Driving School to Address Driver Shortage in Saga Prefecture

Addressing Driver Shortage in Japan with International Collaboration

In a strategic move to combat the pressing driver shortage in Japan, Factory Lab has forged a partnership with a major driving school in Thailand. This collaboration aims to facilitate the recruitment of skilled foreign truck drivers for Saga Prefecture, a significant development given the alarming statistics surrounding the shortage of drivers in the logistics sector.

The Urgent Need for Drivers

As reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the effective job placement ratio for drivers reached 2.64 times, indicating a serious imbalance between demand and supply. The forecast suggests that while the driver deficit was around 40,000 in 2020, this number may soar to over 140,000 by 2025, and exceed 210,000 by 2030. Such alarming figures have prompted local governments, including Saga Prefecture, to explore innovative solutions.

A Comprehensive Model for Recruitment

Beginning in June 2025, Saga Prefecture will initiate a model project aimed at accepting foreign drivers. Factory Lab has been entrusted with this initiative, which focuses on the development of a robust model for integrating foreign drivers into local logistics operations. The program aims to accept three selected candidates from Thailand by April 2026. In collaboration with the Saga Prefectural Truck Association and various driving schools, the project will facilitate not only employment but also assist these new drivers in obtaining their Japanese mid-sized driver's licenses.

On August 26, 2025, a recruitment event was held in Thailand, where candidates underwent face-to-face interviews and practical driving tests. Out of over 60 applicants, three candidates were selected. All selected individuals possess prior experience as technical interns in Japan or have worked at Japanese companies in Thailand. Additionally, they are proficient in Japanese, having achieved at least N3 level certification, and have experience in transportation, making them well-suited to learn the Japanese driving methodologies.

These promising recruits are expected to arrive in Japan as early as December of this year. During the interim, they will undergo both theoretical and practical training with local schools in preparation for obtaining their Japanese driver's licenses.

Direct Recruitment without Intermediaries

Factory Lab is leveraging its Bangkok base to conduct direct recruitment of Thai talent, bypassing local dispatch agencies. With an existing database of over 20,000 Thai speakers, the company has successfully facilitated the hiring of skilled workers for various sectors, including specific skills and advanced professions. Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, the number of Thais working in Japan has remained relatively low, limiting opportunities in essential worker markets. However, the Thai people, known for their agreeable nature and cultural compatibility with Japan, are increasingly being recognized for their potential contributions in various industries, including manufacturing and services.

Commitment to Education and Safety

Factory Lab is committed to providing quality education and training, ensuring that the foreign drivers not only meet but exceed Japanese safety standards. In collaboration with Saga's Jonan Driving School, the program emphasizes comprehensive safety training in both academic and practical aspects. This initiative will take place at the Advance Driving School located in Thailand's Samut Prakan province and is aimed at facilitating a smooth transition into driving in Japan.

Future Plans for Expansion

Building on the insights and methodologies gained from the Saga Prefecture project, Factory Lab plans to expand its operations to other regions, including Indonesia. By focusing on recruiting individuals who have work experience in Japan and training them in vital skills, Factory Lab aims to set a precedent for the training and employment of skilled foreign drivers across Kyushu and eventually nationwide.
