Dr. Ian Young Takes the Helm of The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine

In an exciting development for the field of laboratory medicine, the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM), which was previously known as AACC, has announced the appointment of Dr. Ian Young as the new editor in chief of The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine. This role will officially commence on January 1, 2026.

Dr. Young currently holds the position of chief scientific advisor for the Department of Health in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In addition, he is the director of research and development for health and social care in the region, showcasing his commitment to advancing health outcomes through scientific inquiry. His academic credentials are equally impressive, serving as a professor of medicine at Queen's University Belfast and as a consultant chemical pathologist at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Prior to this role, Dr. Young was already familiar with the editorial process as he previously served as the deputy editor and past associate editor of ADLM's other journal, Clinical Chemistry. With over 450 research papers published, Dr. Young brings a wealth of experience in reviewing clinically relevant laboratory medicine literature, ensuring that high-quality research continues to be part of the journal's offerings.

One of the significant changes that will coincide with Dr. Young's appointment is a shift to a Gold Open Access business model for The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine. This transformation will allow all published papers to be permanently available online, free of charge, enabling wider access to scientific knowledge. As the new editor, Dr. Young's focus will not only be on managing this transition but also on ensuring the journal's distinct identity compared to other reputable publications within the realm of laboratory medicine.
