Maritime Launch Services Gains Funding for New Launch Pad
Maritime Launch Services Inc. has reached a significant milestone in its quest to bolster Canada’s presence in the commercial space industry. The company recently announced that it has
secured approval for approximately $10.5 million from the Province of Nova Scotia under the
Capital Investment Tax Credit (CITC). This funding will pave the way for constructing a specialized launch pad designated for small launch vehicles, which will not only support the company’s expanding clientele but also contribute to the burgeoning global marketplace for satellite delivery.
The CITC initiative was designed to incentivize capital investments in Nova Scotia by providing refundable corporate tax credits for approved projects. This support aims to cultivate a robust commercial space infrastructure, enhancing Canada’s capabilities in the realm of space technology. The
CITC program has previously allocated around
$30.7 million for various qualified infrastructure projects at Spaceport Nova Scotia, further solidifying the province’s commitment to becoming a key player in the aerospace sector.
Stephen Matier, President and CEO of Maritime Launch, emphasized the importance of this support by stating, “This backing from the Province sends a clear
message to the global space industry that Nova Scotia is open for business.” He believes that CITC funding will lay the groundwork for a vibrant commercial space sector, bringing forth jobs, innovation, and investment opportunities to rural areas in Nova Scotia.
The planned launch pad will be a
dedicated, stand-alone platform aimed to serve Maritime Launch's growing roster of international clients seeking to deploy satellites into orbit. The project includes
essential infrastructure elements such as flame diverters, propellant system interfaces, electrical systems, and more—tailored specifically for modern small launch vehicles. This comprehensive infrastructure will ensure that the orbital launch operations are conducted safely and efficiently.
Premier Tim Houston remarked, “Nova Scotia is working to grow our economy, and we’re excited to see companies investing in their future here.” The launch pad is not merely a step forward for Maritime Launch, but a catalyst for economic growth within the region. As the
spaceport becomes operational, it is expected to create up to
30 jobs in various local sectors, including technical, operational, and maintenance roles.
Furthermore, this project is anticipated to drive substantial local economic activity as the infrastructure development will stimulate demand in neighboring construction, hospitality, and service sectors—thus, requiring an expansive local labor force. Beyond job creation, the establishment of Spaceport Nova Scotia is aimed at anchoring a
new high-tech sector within the region, thereby diversifying the economy and positioning Nova Scotia as a competitive destination for space and satellite companies.
The
CITC provides robust support by offsetting 25% of eligible capital expenditures for approved projects in the area, with the potential of maxing out at
$100 million. This program is critical in attracting private sector investments, fueling innovation, and fostering conducive conditions for sustainable economic growth in Nova Scotia. The province’s government is confident that this initiative will spur long-term benefits for both the municipality and the province as a whole, reinforcing Canada’s sovereignty in satellite communications.
