Mars Enhances European Gum Supply Chain with Sustainable Shubh Mint Programme

Mars Integrates Shubh Mint Programme into European Supply Chain

In a significant move towards sustainability, Mars has begun integrating menthol sourced from its Shubh Mint programme into the chewing gum supply chain across Europe. This initiative, which supplies factories in the UK and Poland, marks a broader commitment to sustainability and social responsibility in the company’s operations.

The Background of Shubh Mint

The Shubh Mint programme was launched in 2017 with a vision to improve the livelihoods of mint farmers in Uttar Pradesh, India, where approximately 80% of the world’s natural menthol is produced. The concentration of menthol production in a single region presents a business risk due to climate change, declining yields, and rising costs. Synthetic alternatives exist, but Mars chose to invest in natural menthol to build a more resilient supply chain, realizing the long-term benefits for both the business and local farmers.

With more than 24,000 farmers engaged in the Shubh Mint programme, many have witnessed their incomes double, with production costs reduced by around 20%. This transformation is a result of Marsh's investment in training, better agricultural practices, and improved planting materials.

A Cohesive Approach to Farming

Initially starting as a pilot project, the programme focused on climate-smart agricultural practices that included improved planting techniques, irrigation, and crop management strategies. Pilot projects on small demonstration plots allowed farmers to learn and implement new practices with reduced risk. Joseph Boulier, Managing Director of Tanager's Food Systems division, expressed that the programme drastically improved profitability and sustainability for mint farming households before scaling up to a community-wide initiative.

The scaling process involved forming Farmer Producer Companies and encouraging women’s participation through Self-Help Groups. These groups have become instrumental in enhancing financial literacy and empowering women within these communities, allowing over 1,000 to start independent businesses ranging from retail to dairy farming.

Building Communities and the Environment

The community-wide approach showcases how strategic partnerships can strengthen supply chains while creating social value. Increased yields and reduced costs contribute to household income stability and supply reliability. Furthermore, by employing climate-smart practices, farmers are not only supporting their families but are also contributing positively to the environment, cultivating a healthier ecosystem.

As the Shubh Mint initiative matures, it is evolving towards a 'full farm' approach aimed at assisting farmers in achieving certified living incomes across all their crops. This comprehensive strategy will help diversify income streams, mitigate risks from single-crop dependency, and ensure long-term resilience for families.

Social Impact and Future Aspirations

Mars's sustainable practices amplify the belief in shared value—when businesses focus on people and the planet, they create successful economic frameworks. This initiative embodies the company’s dedication to community strength and ecological conservation. Meenal Bahirwani, Sustainable Sourcing Lead at Mars Snacking, poignantly noted, "The most meaningful impact of Shubh is seeing women who once identified themselves with a thumbprint now proudly signing their own names. That simple change reflects something far greater—confidence, agency, and the belief that they can shape their own futures."

Mars's ambitious goal with the Shubh Mint programme sets a precedent for other businesses: that sustainable resource management, social responsibility, and economic performance can coexist harmoniously. As this initiative evolves, it signifies not only a commitment to sustainability but also a replicable model for transforming agricultural practices and empowering communities holistically. Mars's vision is clear—the future hinges on investing in a sustainable supply chain that uplifts everyone involved while positively impacting our planet.
