Yang Chaobin Discusses a Smarter World with 5G-A and U6GHz
At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on March 12, 2026, Yang Chaobin, the CEO of Huawei's ICT Business Group, spoke about the significant role of 5G-A and U6GHz technology in shaping a more intelligent world. As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms industries and consumer experiences, there is an urgent need for telecommunications to evolve. Yang urged the information and communications technology (ICT) sector to intensify efforts to extend access to AI advancements by leveraging 5G-A and new frequency bands like U6GHz.
Emerging Demands in the Age of Mobile AI
Yang pointed out that in just two years, the daily global usage of tokens has skyrocketed nearly 300 times. He asserted that the intelligent era is imminent, filled with emerging AI applications. "It's time for our industry to unite and fully harness the potential of 5G-A," he stated. He emphasized the necessity of tapping into new spectrum resources, such as U6GHz, to create added value for the industry while paving the way for a transition to 6G technology. To achieve this, networks must shift their focus from merely downlink capabilities to providing extensive bandwidth for both uplink and downlink, enabling multimodal data exchange among devices and AI clouds.
Furthermore, reliable, low-latency connectivity is crucial to fostering real-time collaboration and intelligent decision-making.
Bridging Generational Gaps with 5G-A
Yang highlighted that 5G-A serves not only as a bridge between different generations of mobile communication but also adapts its expanded capabilities to meet the ever-evolving market demands. Huawei is committed to preparing the groundwork for 6G through collaborative discussions to define standards, use cases, and appropriate technologies. With 6G standards expected to emerge by 2029, the next five years are crucial for the development of AI mobile services. This "golden window" will leverage the technological advantages of 5G-A.
He noted that the industry must concentrate on implementing 6G, acknowledging that "AI won't wait, and it is our industry's mission to determine how to utilize 5G-A networks to meet these rapidly escalating demands." To meet these challenges, he specified providing downlink speeds of 10 Gb/s and uplink speeds of 1 Gb/s (a significant improvement over current 4G uplink speeds), alongside new IoT technologies like RedCap and passive IoT.
Moreover, he raised concerns about ensuring fair returns for investors in network infrastructure.
Tackling Global Disparities in Connectivity
In the coming years, collaboration will be essential to address the increasing demands for AI. As technology boundaries are explored, the global development imbalance must also be confronted. Yang pointed out that approximately 300 million people still lack mobile coverage – a digital divide that could widen with accelerating AI advancements. Bridging this gap requires ongoing innovation through diverse spectrum portfolios and cost-effective solution designs.
Huawei's innovative RuralStar system, implemented in over 80 countries, has already connected 170 million people and facilitated various initiatives, including digital classrooms in Kenya via DigiTruck, village-level financial services in Bangladesh, and remote healthcare in Argentina.
Expanding 5G-A Capabilities with U6GHz
5G-A has already been deployed in over 300 cities globally and is ready for further expansion. Due to resource shortages in many regions, the U6GHz band is becoming pivotal for ensuring extensive network capacity and is now recognized as a key frequency for future mobile communications, supported by advanced 5G-A chips and industrial infrastructure.
"The intelligent era is accelerating. We must work together in the next five years to meet AI service demands through widespread commercialization of 5G-A," Yang concluded.
