Discover Future Stars: Highlights from the 2025 Master Concert at Bunkamura

A Celebration of New Talent at Bunkamura

On September 7th, the Bunkamura Orchard Hall hosted a remarkable event, the "Future Masters Concert 2025," which aims to spotlight and nurture young musical talents. This concert, part of the initiative "Discover Future Stars," continues Bunkamura’s long legacy of promoting culture and arts since its establishment in 1989.

Bunkamura, managed by Tokyu Bunka Village Co., Ltd. and located in Shibuya, Tokyo, has thrived as a multi-cultural venue, bolstered by the support of its official suppliers. Although the venue is temporarily closed for renovation, it sees this as an opportunity to explore new challenges and continue its mission of inspiring the community through arts.

Unearthing Young Masterpieces

The concert featured two exceptional young soloists: trumpeter Shutarou Matsui and cellist Sakura Toba, who performed alongside the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of conductor Kinbo Ishii. The evening commenced with Glinka’s overture from Ruslan and Lyudmila, which wonderfully drew the audience into the orchestral realm with its vibrant string and brass sections, combined with powerful timpani rhythms.

Shutarou Matsui graced the stage with a warm smile, showcasing his talents through the Armenian Trumpet Concerto, known for its exotic melodies. Matsui, who has made his mark across various music genres from jazz to classical, believes in letting the trumpet’s unique sound shine without being confined to a single genre. His performance was not just about technical proficiency but an emotional expression that resonated deeply with the audience.

Particularly impressive was his original cadenza, which included elements of jazz, encapsulating his innovative spirit, followed by an encore performance of his original composition "TRUST ME," accompanied by the orchestra. The nostalgic melody filled the hall, allowing each listener to reflect on their own treasured memories.

Showcasing Depth and Emotion

The latter half featured cellist Sakura Toba in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. Toba’s choice for this captivating piece showcased both powerful assertiveness and quiet introspection, reflected in her striking two-tone dress—a metaphor for the piece’s duality. The opening of the first movement saw her begin with humor, engaging with the audience before transitioning into a stunningly focused performance.

Her ability to maintain eye contact with the conductor and blend seamlessly with the orchestra highlighted her exceptional ensemble skills. In the serene second movement, she revealed a clean, emotive sound that navigated various nuanced feelings. The third movement allowed her a solo cadenza, where she explored the depths of her emotions, reminiscent of Bach’s grace and boldness, which belied her young age.

The concert concluded with an exhilarating final movement, merging with the orchestra to create a climactic ending. For her encore, Toba selected pieces from Weinberg’s 24 Preludes for Solo Cello, subtly echoing themes from Shostakovich’s concerto, demonstrating her deep connection to the music.

The 2025 concert encapsulated the essence of classical music’s future, featuring two artists who not only displayed extraordinary abilities but also laid the groundwork for their future paths in the world of music. As Bunkamura continues to invest in nurturing young talents, anticipation grows for what Shutarou Matsui and Sakura Toba will accomplish next.
