New Leadership Appointments Mark a Progressive Era in Cancer Care and Research

The Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) has recently announced significant changes in leadership aimed at advancing its commitment to cancer research and patient care. Dr. Ulrich Steidl, who took over as Director of MECCC only six months ago, has successfully assembled a strong team of senior leaders who bring a wealth of experience and notable achievements in the field of oncology. Dr. Steidl emphasizes that this new chapter will lead to breakthroughs not only in cancer survival but also in understanding why certain cancers develop.

Among the new appointments, Dr. Amit K. Verma, previously an Associate Director at MECCC, has been named Chair of the Department of Medical Oncology. Dr. Verma is recognized for his pioneering work with myeloid neoplasms, including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). His research was instrumental in identifying critical cellular signaling pathways that have direct implications for developing new therapeutic strategies, leading to an FDA-approved treatment for MDS. Recently celebrated with a prestigious 'All-Star' grant from the V Foundation, Dr. Verma's exceptional advancements highlight the potential for transformative projects in cancer research and treatment.

Additionally, Dr. Julio A. Aguirre-Ghiso has been appointed as the Associate Director of Basic Sciences. As a global leader in cancer dormancy research, Dr. Aguirre-Ghiso's work focuses on the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to remain latent for extended periods. His insights into how these cells can suddenly reactivate and lead to lethal metastasis have earned him significant recognition, including a prestigious award from the Metastasis Research Society. His knowledge and curiosity drive significant advancements in understanding cancer biology.

Dr. Marina Konopleva now serves as the Associate Director of Translational Science and holds notable dual roles as Co-Director of the Blood Cancer Institute and Director of the Leukemia Program at Montefiore Einstein. Acclaimed for her groundbreaking research on how leukemic cells evade apoptosis, Dr. Konopleva's work in developing targeted therapies continues to change treatment paradigms for myeloid leukemias. Her contributions to clinical practices have facilitated FDA approvals of new drugs that provoke cell death, marking critical progress in cancer treatment.

Recognizing the importance of community involvement in cancer research, Dr. Steidl's leadership team has also established a new role dedicated to exploring the intersections of environmental exposures, health-related social needs, and cancer health outcomes. Dr. H. Dean Hosgood, renowned for his expertise in environmental epidemiology, will lead this initiative, focusing on how indoor air pollutants contributed to heightened cancer risk. His extensive research, published in over 250 peer-reviewed articles, aims to deepen our understanding of gene-environment interactions affecting cancer survival rates.

Complementing this dynamic leadership team is Dr. Wenjun Guo, serving as Co-Director of the Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis Program alongside Dr. Maja H. Oktay and Dr. Julio Aguirre-Ghiso. Meanwhile, Dr. Aditi Shastri joins forces with Dr. Steven Almo and Dr. Evripidis Gavathiotis in directing the Cancer Therapy Program, which emphasizes precision medicine and cellular therapies.

For over 50 years, MECCC has been at the forefront of innovative cancer care and community engagement by developing transdisciplinary initiatives, including its Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis Program, Cancer Stem Cell Biology efforts, and Cancer Epidemiology Programs. Patients at MECCC also benefit from support services such as the Bronx Oncology Living Daily program, which offers peer support and wellness workshops that include yoga, reiki, and creative arts.

Designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), MECCC integrates the scientific rigor of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine with a multidisciplinary approach to cancer clinical care through Montefiore Health System. Since its founding in 1971, MECCC has elevated benchmarks of excellence in cancer research, clinical education, community outreach, and patient engagement, aiming to significantly reduce cancer's impact on global health.
