On April 17, 2026, Pratt & Whitney, a key division of RTX (NYSE: RTX), made an important announcement regarding its GTF Advantage™ engine. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified this advanced engine for the Airbus A320neo aircraft family, a significant step towards ramping up production and entering service.
Engine Overview
The GTF Advantage engine, which was earlier certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in February 2025, marks a milestone as EASA validated its type certification in October 2025. With this dual certification, Pratt & Whitney is poised to deliver its engines to airline operators around the globe, particularly those utilizing the A320neo family.
Rick Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, noted that the GTF engine is recognized for offering the lowest fuel consumption in single-aisle aircraft. The GTF Advantage takes this further, promising up to double the flying time on wing and enhancing the overall aircraft capability. This means airlines can expect improved operational efficiency and value from their aircraft.
Performance Improvements
The GTF Advantage engine delivers between 4% to 8% more takeoff thrust compared to its predecessors. This feature allows for higher payload capacities and extended range capabilities, opening up new routes and destinations for airlines. As the production standard going forward, Pratt & Whitney plans for the full adoption of the GTF Advantage by 2028, with options available for operators to retrofit their existing engines with durability upgrades.
Upgrades and Investments
Pratt & Whitney has also introduced the GTF Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade option available for the PW1100G-JM engine model. This upgrade enables current operators of the GTF engine to benefit from up to 90-95% of the GTF Advantage's increased durability, providing a seamless transition that minimizes operational disruptions during maintenance visits.
The company is further strengthening its production capabilities to meet the growing demand for these engines. Significant investments are being directed toward their facilities, with nearly $1 billion allocated for the turbine airfoil facility in Asheville, North Carolina, and an additional $200 million for the Columbus, Georgia forging facility. These enhancements support Pratt & Whitney’s commitment to advancing aerospace technology and manufacturing processes.
Global Impact
To date, over 2,700 aircraft powered by GTF engines have been delivered to more than 90 customers worldwide. The demand for the GTF remains robust, with over 13,000 engine orders across various platforms. With its revolutionary geared architecture, the GTF engine is positioned as a critical backbone for next-generation single-aisle aircraft, expected to accrue more than 300 million flight hours by the mid-2030s.
