The Cacao Crisis and Child Labor Awareness
In recent years, the so-called "cacao shock" has caused significant increases in chocolate prices worldwide. However, this economic upheaval casts a shadow over the cocoa-producing regions, notably in Ghana, where a startling reality persists: the widespread prevalence of child labor. Amid this backdrop, an essential documentary titled
"Valentine's Uprising" has emerged, aiming to raise consciousness about the plight of children in cacao farms.
Produced by the certified NPO ACE (Action Against Child Exploitation),
"Valentine's Uprising" narrates the inspiring journey of three ordinary Japanese girls who confront the grim realities of child labor in Ghana. The film aims to encourage viewers, particularly during the chocolate-intensive Valentine's season, to opt for ethically sourced products.
The Reality of Child Labor in Ghana
Approximately 70% of the cacao imported by Japan comes from West Africa, particularly Ghana. Shockingly, there are around 770,000 child laborers in cacao farming there, with nearly half of these children working under hazardous conditions, such as pesticide application. The significance of addressing this issue becomes particularly urgent as chocolate prices soar in 2023 due to global market fluctuations.
Currently, despite the rising costs of chocolate, cacao farmers continue to live unstable lives marked by poverty. This dilemma fosters an environment where child labor remains a persistent and critical issue. The film
"Valentine's Uprising" urges everyone to recognize these realities during the Valentine’s season when chocolate consumption is at its peak. It calls upon individuals to act by participating in public screenings held nationwide.
Join the Movement: The #KifuChoco Campaign
In addition to the film screenings, ACE has launched a new initiative called the #KifuChoco campaign. This campaign allows consumers to easily contribute to the fight against child labor while purchasing their favorite chocolates. By purchasing selected products from brands such as Morinaga and Yuyaku Seika, a portion of the sales will be donated to ACE’s efforts to protect children from child labor in Ghana.
The #KifuChoco campaign runs from January 13 to February 14 this year, promoting the idea that choosing ethically made chocolate can lead to a brighter future for the children involved in cacao production.
The Essence of the Film
The movie depicts the courageous actions of three Japanese girls who, upon encountering the harsh realities of child labor, determined to take small yet significant steps toward making a difference. They appeal to viewers to choose truly loving chocolates made under fair-trade conditions. Since its inception in 2012, the film has been screened over 450 times across Japan, garnering extensive public response and dialogue.
Upcoming public screenings are scheduled for February 2026 in Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Iwate, with details available on the official website. Anyone interested in hosting a screening can apply through the citizen screening site "Cinemo" and receive discounted rates for screenings held in February.
Understanding Child Labor
Child labor, as defined by law, refers to work that interferes with a child's right to education and includes hazardous work for anyone under the age of 18. Sadly, the cacao harvest and transportation involve many child laborers in Ghana, with a staggering percentage working in perilous conditions. ACE’s ongoing projects aim to protect these children from dangerous tasks and ensure their right to education through initiatives like the "Smile Ghana Project".
