Photography Exhibition Featuring a Transcontinental Journey Opens in China, Connecting Cultures and Histories
Cycling the Silk Road: A Cultural Journey
On April 29, 2026, the China National Silk Museum unveiled its latest photography exhibition titled "Cycling the Silk Road from Morocco to China" at its Fashion Gallery. The exhibition highlights the remarkable journey undertaken by Moroccan endurance athlete and traveler Karim Mosta as he cycled from Casablanca to Beijing in 2024. With the event serving as a prelude to the 2026 Silk Road Week, where Morocco is the honored guest, the gallery's opening ceremony featured key attendees including Morocco's Ambassador to China, His Excellency Abdelkader El Ansari, and the photographer himself.
This exhibition showcases fifty documentary photographs that capture the essence of Mosta’s seven-month journey, which spanned approximately 15,000 kilometers across fifteen countries. As he traversed Africa, Europe, and Asia, Mosta's lens brought forth the diverse landscapes, border towns, local communities, and everyday encounters that shaped his riveting exploration of this modern Silk Road, diverse and enriched by human movement and connection.
Delving into deeper historical resonances, the exhibition also recalls the legendary travels of Ibn Battuta, a revered Moroccan traveler of the 14th century who journeyed across Eurasia, eventually reaching China. His chronicles remain a cornerstone of travel literature. Over seven centuries later, Mosta embarks on a contemporary reinterpretation of this ancient trade route, rekindling connections that span cultures and eras. His journey underscores not only physical endurance but a profound spirit of curiosity, openness, and exploration that continues to bridge communities across the globe today.
As the featured guest country at the 2026 Silk Road Week, Morocco is set to engage in numerous collaborative programs alongside the China National Silk Museum and Moroccan cultural institutions. These initiatives will include traditional costume displays, academic exchanges, fashion collaborations, and fashion shows that are inspired by the rich history of the Silk Road and the tangible cultures it has shaped. The exhibition acts as an introduction to these programs, further enriching the cultural dialogue between China and Morocco.
Visitors to the museum are invited to explore reflections on diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes through Karim Mosta’s stunning photographs. They will be encouraged to contemplate the enduring values of the Silk Road, characterized by exchange, mutual understanding, and shared humanity. This enchanting exhibition is open to the public until July 31, 2026.
In an era of rapid globalization, such exhibitions serve as essential reminders of our interconnectedness, allowing for the celebration of both local and global cultures through art. The Silk Road was never just a physical route; it was a symbol of human curiosity and the desire to explore the world and forge connections. This exhibit clearly embodies that spirit, preserving the legacy of the past while inspiring future generations to continue fostering relationships across borders.
