Maire and Newcleo Join Forces on Innovative Joint Venture for Advanced Nuclear Technologies

Maire S.p.A. has officially entered into an agreement to form a joint venture company (JVC) with newcleo, marking a significant step towards the development of advanced nuclear power solutions. This collaboration is centered on the delivery of technical services and equipment tailored to support newcleo’s 200 MWe Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR). The agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to pushing the frontiers of nuclear energy technology.

The joint venture aims to provide high-level technical services that span the entire project lifecycle—from design and critical equipment supply to project management integration. As part of this partnership, newcleo will secure a 40% ownership stake in the new venture. This move reflects a shared vision of innovating within the energy sector, particularly in developing sustainable energy solutions through intelligent collaboration.

Newcleo has ambitious plans for its AMR technology, with initial prototypes expected to be developed by 2026 in Italy. Following this, the first reactor is projected to come online in France by the end of 2031, with commercial plant investments anticipated by 2029. The introduction of newcleo's LFR-AS-200 technology represents a commitment to a circular economy by utilizing reprocessed nuclear waste as fuel, aligning with NEXTCHEM's values of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

The JVC is not only an endeavor to create new intellectual property and technical services but will also market its expertise to other small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) technology providers. This strategic business model is designed to support the industrialization of the energy transition, potentially benefiting various customers who are interested in Generation IV nuclear technologies.

NEXTCHEM will play a critical role in this joint venture by contributing its specialized skills, engineering competencies, and a commercial platform to accelerate LFR-AS-200 project deployment. The company will be integral in refining designs and procuring important equipment, enhancing the nuclear power project’s viability and efficiency. Moreover, NEXTCHEM’s involvement will help optimize the construction methodologies, reducing both time and costs through its advanced approaches.

TECNIMONT, a subsidiary of MAIRE, will be designated as the preferred engineering solutions provider under this venture, leveraging its technological capabilities to streamline the project execution process. MAIRE's CEO, Alessandro Bernini, has expressed strong confidence in the partnership, citing it as an essential step in delivering sustainable energy solutions and facilitating the transition to carbon-neutral chemical models.

This strategic alignment between MAIRE and newcleo is set to create a transformational impact on the nuclear energy landscape, paving the way for innovative, efficient, and environmentally-friendly energy solutions. The agreement is expected to finalize by February 2025, setting the stage for a collaborative future that prioritizes sustainable technology solutions and the successful delivery of smart energy infrastructures.
