New Community Hub: Iida Minna no Ie
The city of Suzu has recently welcomed a new community haven known as 'Iida Minna no Ie,' which officially opened its doors in April 2026. This facility is a brainchild of NPO Gakuso, dedicated to promoting learning and interaction within the community, a mission they have actively pursued since before the earthquake tragedy that affected the region.
A Revitalizing Space in the Heart of Suzu
Situated in a narrow plot once occupied by a framing shop in the bustling shopping district of Iida, this new structure is designed to accommodate the needs of local residents across generations. The architectural vision incorporates both modern and traditional elements, making excellent use of materials rescued from demolished houses. For instance, the roof is adorned with traditional black tiles, while the pillars and counters are crafted from reclaimed wood, invoking memories of the past while looking toward the future.
In line with sustainable practices, handmade sun-dried bricks fill the walls, and vintage furniture has been thoughtfully arranged throughout the space. Despite being a new construction, 'Iida Minna no Ie' resonates with the community’s history, symbolizing a blend of the old and the new.
Multifunctional Spaces Designed for All Ages
The layout includes diverse areas that cater to various activities, from casual gatherings to educational workshops. Different sections provide a kitchen, studio, multi-purpose spaces, and even cozy areas to relax. The design fosters interaction among individuals of all ages, encouraging them to engage with one another in a welcoming environment.
The project represents the second site under the ongoing 'Noto Minna no Ie' initiative, led by the acclaimed architect Toyo Ito through NPO HOME-FOR-ALL, which has been operational since 2014. With the support of Japan Foundation’s grant for community hubs, NPO Gakuso manages this project, showcasing collaboration within the community.
Community Collaboration and Support
Involvement from local businesses, municipalities, and various organizations has been instrumental in bringing 'Iida Minna no Ie' to fruition. The architectural design comes from PERSIMMON HILLS architects, ensuring that the facilities meet both aesthetic and functional needs of the inhabitants.
During the opening ceremony, which took place on April 12, 2026, several key figures—including the mayor of Suzu City and representatives from the Japan Foundation—gathered to celebrate this important milestone. Children from the community participated in a traditional Japanese rice cake ceremony, further emphasizing the hub's community spirit.
Future Expansion of 'Noto Minna no Ie'
The launch of 'Iida Minna no Ie' is part of a larger vision that includes five additional projects across Noto. These include various community homes and spaces, each designed to address the needs of local populations and rebuild meaningful connections after the earthquake. Notable upcoming projects include 'Noroshi Minna no Ie' and 'Sakaimin Minna no Ie,' with completion dates ranging from 2025 to 2027. The overarching goal remains to create lively centers where friendships bloom, and the area's rich traditions are preserved.
Conclusion
'Iida Minna no Ie' stands not just as a shelter for various activities but as a testament to resilience and unity in the face of adversity. This new community hub is more than a building; it is a sanctuary for current and future generations to grow, learn, and connect, rekindling a sense of belonging in Suzu’s evolving landscape.
