Sinopec Unveils Africa Sustainability Report and WE17 Brand in Cairo During Landmark Event

Sinopec's Impact in Africa: A Commitment to Sustainability

On October 25, 2026, in Cairo, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, commonly known as Sinopec, released its Africa Sustainability Report covering the period from 2021 to 2025. This report highlights the significant strides the company has made in various fields, including energy cooperation, environmental protection, community development, and cultural exchange.

At the event, Sinopec also introduced its new global communication brand, WE17, which aims to promote sustainable initiatives worldwide. The director of Sinopec Africa, Wei Dong, shared insights into the company’s robust activities in Africa, noting that they implemented 33 projects across 16 countries, with investments exceeding $5.7 billion. The efforts during this timeframe included paying over $4 billion in taxes and contributions to social responsibility, directly creating around 16,000 local jobs by 2025.

Sinopec's Vision of Cooperation

Zhao Liuqing, a counselor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, highlighted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt. He cited Sinopec’s involvement in Egypt as an illustration of strategic partnership and its role in strengthening ties between the two nations. Magdy Amer, a board member of the Egypt-China Friendship Association and former ambassador to China, acknowledged the firm’s contributions to Egypt's socio-economic development.

Energy and Environmental Initiatives

The sustainability report elaborates on Sinopec's ongoing activities in oil and gas exploration, engineering services, refining, energy trading, and renewable energies. A major highlight includes the company's collaboration with Apache Corporation to explore wind and solar alternatives for operations in Egypt's Western Desert, where gas flaring has been reduced by over 60% by the end of 2025.

In Angola, Sinopec is involved in five offshore exploration and development blocks and maintains long-term energy partnerships with Algeria. Renewable energy projects encompass the Adama Wind Project in Ethiopia, meeting approximately 20% of Addis Ababa’s electricity demand, and geothermal energy initiatives in Kenya that promote clean electricity generation. Notably, Sinopec has undertaken significant environmental initiatives, planting over 7,000 mangroves in Angola and deploying ultra-low noise drilling equipment in Uganda which has resulted in more than a 90% decrease in carbon emissions compared to conventional equipment.

Community Development and Cultural Exchange

Sinopec's community programs focus on employment, vocational training, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. A welding training initiative in Uganda has certified 60 local workers with internationally recognized qualifications. Across Africa, the company has contributed to constructing over 70 water supply plants and laying more than 4,300 kilometers of water pipelines.

In Egypt, a supportive initiative in education has facilitated the establishment of 201 girls' schools, offering educational opportunities for over 15,000 female students. Additionally, cultural exchange activities include the 'Silk Road Book House' initiative in Egypt, Algeria, and Cameroon, alongside youth-oriented cultural exchange activities.

The Launch of WE17

During this significant event, Sinopec also introduced the WE17 brand, which encapsulates the company's sustainability communication efforts under the theme 'Together for Better.' Aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), WE17 focuses on three pillars: 'Clean' emphasizing environmental responsibility, 'Care' advocating for community welfare, and 'Culture' promoting intercultural dialogue and exchange.

The gathering attracted around 100 representatives from government, business, academia, and media, marking a pivotal moment for Sinopec’s ongoing journey towards sustainable development in Africa. For additional details, visit Sinopec's official website.
