VIVA VERDI! Launches Impact Campaign with Special Screenings

Following a surge in recognition, the Oscar-nominated documentary VIVA VERDI! has initiated an Impact Campaign featuring special screenings and discussions at Mount Sinai Health System and New York University. This week’s events converge the realms of art, aging, and intergenerational discussions, embodying the core themes prevalent in VIVA VERDI!

The film offers an intricate portrayal of Casa Verdi in Milan, a historic retirement home established by composer Giuseppe Verdi for aging opera performers. This documentary not only captures their unique experiences but also showcases the significant contributions of these individuals to the arts as they embrace their later years.

One of the notable aspects of this Impact Campaign is its collaboration with Mount Sinai's Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, along with NYU's Italian Studies Department. The screenings engage a diverse audience comprising healthcare professionals, students, and community members, fueling discussions about the connection between creativity, longevity, and mental well-being.

According to Christine La Monte, the producer of VIVA VERDI!, and director Yvonne Russo, these events represent just the start. They emphasize that the documentary highlights not only the narrative of aging but also an urgent call-to-action for integrating music and creativity into the lives of older adults. They state, “Our goal is to provide new perspectives, inspire advocacy, and showcase the remarkable model Giuseppe Verdi created over a century ago.”

Dr. R. Sean Morrison, who chairs the Brookdale Department, emphasized that VIVA VERDI! illustrates that creativity and vocation do not wane with age; instead, they flourish. The panel discussions following the screenings aim to demonstrate how artistic engagement plays a crucial role in supporting emotional, cognitive, and physical health—truths that this poignant documentary captures.

At Mount Sinai, the film has already made a profound impact within the medical community, stressing the importance of preserving dignity and purpose as one ages. At NYU, conversations delve into the realms of cultural heritage, Italian legacy, and Verdi's lasting influence across generations.

This Impact Campaign is a part of a greater initiative to engage various institutions across the U.S., from health systems to educational bodies, aiming to disseminate the film’s critical messages on aging and quality of life. As the Executive Producer and Founder of For Impact Productions, Simone Pero articulated, VIVA VERDI! serves as more than just a film; it is a call to action, addressing the imperative need to adopt creative aging models in our society.

Focusing on artists aged 77 to 107 who continue to thrive, teach, and create at Casa Verdi, this documentary turns traditional narratives about aging upside-down. It presents a powerful human story of resilience and community, united by the timeless influence of music.
