The International 2026: A Celebration of Esports in Shanghai

The International 2026 (TI2026), marking the 15th anniversary of the world's leading Dota 2 tournament, concluded on August 23, 2026, at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. This year, the tournament witnessed a thrilling final where Team Spirit emerged victorious over Team Vision with a close score of 3-2, securing their third Aegis of Champions, a feat unmatched in the history of the event.

Team Spirit's unprecedented third title at TI cemented their position as a powerhouse in the esports community, highlighting their superior strategy and teamwork that led them to victory. Over the ten days of intense competition, 16 elite teams from around the globe gathered in Shanghai, showcasing their skills in a celebration of sportsmanship and global connectivity.

Organized by Valve Corporation, the creator of Dota 2, and facilitated by Perfect World Co., Ltd., the exclusive operator of Dota 2 in mainland China, the event transcended mere competition. A standout feature of the tournament was the integration of traditional Chinese culture into its visual and artistic presentation. The event’s identity drew inspiration from traditional embroidery, incorporating gold threads and Eastern motifs, effectively linking the legacy of Dota 2 with Shanghai's historical narrative. An embroidered version of the Aegis of Champions, crafted over four months by artist Tang Xiaohong and her team in Suzhou, exemplified this blend of craftsmanship and modern esports culture.

Sam Gu, CEO of Perfect World, expressed the significance of esports as a conduit for cultural exchange and global dialogue. According to Gu, the project aimed to create a visual dialogue between digital competition and traditional artistry, establishing a recognizable cultural connection for international esports events.

Beyond the excitement within the stadium, the atmosphere in Shanghai was electric with themed installations, fan activities, and alternative viewing spaces scattered throughout the city. This large-scale event attracted audiences from 73 countries and regions, marking a remarkable achievement in participatory engagement and spectator turnout.

TI2026 represented the second time Shanghai hosted The International, following its successful first edition in 2019, solidifying the city’s reputation as an essential venue for international esports.
