Folger Consort Celebrates 50 Years of Music with Exciting 2026-27 Season Events

Celebrating 50 Years of Musical Excellence at Folger Consort

Folger Consort, the acclaimed early music ensemble residing at the Folger Shakespeare Library, proudly announces its concert series for the 2026-27 season. This season is particularly special as it marks the remarkable milestone of 50 years under the leadership of its founding directors, Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall.

Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper, Director of the Folger, reflects on the profound impact of the Consort, stating, "For more than half a century, Folger Consort has inspired audiences with the music of the early modern world. The passion and dedication shown by Bob and Christopher have enabled audiences to develop a richer appreciation for the diverse traditions of European early music." This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the Consort’s contribution as a premier venue for early music over the last fifty years.

The golden anniversary season kicks off in September with a special emphasis on the groundbreaking works of composer Claudio Monteverdi, captivating audiences with the innovative spirit of early 17th-century Venice. The ensemble set to perform a selection of madrigals, motets, and operatic excerpts alongside contributions from Monteverdi’s students and contemporaries, demonstrating the rich tapestry of emerging Baroque music.

As the festive holiday season approaches, audiences can look forward to a unique musical experience from December 11-20, featuring a blend of English Christmas music ranging from medieval compositions to modern day winter sonnets. Highlighting the historical depths of the festive repertoire, the concert will include carols from the courts of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I, culminating in a tribute to the 250th anniversary of America’s independence with joyful anthems from New England composer William Billings.

The program continues in February with an evocative exploration titled, "Folktales and Storied Traditions: Troubadours, Griots, and Hakawatis." This performance will weave together oral histories and folk narratives from West African, Arabic, and European musical traditions, honoring the art of storytelling that has been pivotal in preserving cultural heritages across continents.

To conclude this celebratory season, Folger Consort’s performers will take participants on a nostalgic journey back to its roots. On May 7-9, 2027, the final concert will feature a selection of pieces performed in the very first season fifty years ago, showcasing canonical early music from the medieval to the Elizabethan eras, including works from France, Spain, and Italy.

Directors Eisenstein and Kendall expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating they are committed to celebrating the legacy of the ensemble while inviting new audiences on this historical journey through 500 years of music. "It’s been a wonderful half-century of artistry at the Folger; our excitement in planning this new season remains as vivid as ever. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this extraordinary journey!" explains Eisenstein.
