Mizum Tokyo's New Sustainability Initiative
Mizum Tokyo, part of the Autograph Collection, has announced a monumental shift towards sustainability, set to take effect by the end of March 2026. As a modern luxury hotel situated in the bustling heart of Tokyo, Mizum Tokyo will discontinue the provision of disposable toothbrushes in its guest rooms, urging visitors to bring their own. This move aligns with the hotel’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while setting a new standard for international hospitality.
The decision to eliminate disposable toothbrushes stems from the necessity to address the significant waste generated by such amenities. Over the course of a year, Mizum Tokyo has recorded an estimated use of around 52,750 disposable toothbrushes – approximately 1,070 kilograms of waste. By implementing this initiative, the hotel projects a waste reduction of nearly one ton per year. Moreover, this shift will aid in curbing CO₂ emissions indirectly associated with disposal processes, such as collection, separation, and incineration.
In addition to this program, Mizum Tokyo is revamping its entire range of in-room amenities to include more sustainable options. Starting in 2024, the hotel will introduce a new product called “Bubble Mouthwash,” which utilizes no water and can effectively clean the mouth by releasing bubbles after being swished around. This environmentally-friendly mouthwash is already garnering positive feedback from inbound guests and serves as an excellent lightweight souvenir.
As part of its initiative, Mizum Tokyo aims to enhance guest awareness through communications sent prior to booking and check-in, encouraging them to bring their own toothbrushes. Furthermore, the hotel plans to launch announcements through its website and in-house signage by the end of 2025, ultimately ceasing the distribution of disposable toothbrushes altogether by March 2026. The management will continuously monitor waste levels and guest reactions, ensuring transparency throughout the process.
Hisanuma, the General Manager of Mizum Tokyo, shared his insights on this decision, stating, “Luxury means offering better choices. It’s essential that we provide a unique experience while reducing our impact on the environment. This initiative is a step toward reassessing disposal practices and aligning quality with sustainability.”
This commitment to sustainable resource management is not only about reducing waste; it also reflects Mizum Tokyo’s broader responsibility within the hospitality industry. The hotel strives to create an enjoyable and safe environment for guests while fulfilling its social obligations.
