Schwarzman Animal Medical Center: Transforming Veterinary Care in NYC
The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), recognized as the largest veterinary teaching hospital globally and the only Level 1 veterinary trauma center in New York City, has recently concluded a monumental transformation of its facilities. This extensive renovation, which spanned over four years and required a significant investment of $125 million, has resulted in an 83,000 square-foot expansion that is set to redefine veterinary care standards not just in the city but across the country.
A New Era for PET Care
On December 9, 2025, AMC officially unveiled its reimagined facility. This project marks the most comprehensive renovation in 60 years, underscoring AMC's commitment to innovative animal care. The newly constructed spaces feature cutting-edge technology and specialized units for various disciplines such as Cardiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Internal Medicine, alongside a newly designed Emergency Room.
Helen Irving, the hospital's President and CEO, expressed her enthusiasm during the unveiling, declaring, "Today is a landmark moment… The new state-of-the-art facility will now match our brilliant medical team and enhance our ability to provide leading medical care to pet families 24/7."
Enhancements in Medical Capacity
The transformation project was undertaken in phases, started in 2021, leading to significant upgrades in patient care capacity. In January 2024, AMC introduced the Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care, which tripled its surgical capacity through five newly equipped operating rooms and dedicated recovery areas.
The second phase, completed in April 2025, saw the creation of a nine-floor commercial tower, doubling the hospital's patient capacity and establishing a new Intensive Care Unit as well as an Avian Exotic Pet Medicine service. The final phase brought in the Emergency Room and added clinical spaces tailored for specialized veterinary services.
Commitment to Comprehensive Animal Care
Throughout the renovation, AMC maintained operations, ensuring pets received vital services without interruption. With a dedicated team of over 140 veterinarians, the hospital facilitates more than 20 specialty services, making it an invaluable resource for New York pet owners. Last year alone, AMC reported nearly 57,000 patient visits, including over 21,000 emergency cases.
A Legacy of Care
Established in 1910, originally as the New York Women's League for Animals, AMC has built its legacy by not only offering advanced veterinary care but also committing to community-focused initiatives. The center continues to provide charitable care, including support for rescue animals, guide dogs, and K9 units, demonstrating its dedication to the welfare of all animals.
Schwarzman Animal Medical Center stands as a model of excellence in veterinary care, positioning itself to embrace the next century of advancements in animal health. With the completion of this transformative project, the AMC community looks forward to a future filled with hope, innovation, and superior care for pets and their families.
