Nymeo Federal Credit Union Empowers Young Minds Through Financial Literacy Initiatives
In a groundbreaking initiative to promote financial education, Nymeo Federal Credit Union has partnered with Crestwood Middle School and the CU Foundation MD|DC to provide seventh-grade students in Frederick County with real-world financial lessons just in time for Financial Literacy Month this April. Typically reserved for high schoolers, Financial Reality Fairs are now extending their reach to middle school students, offering a valuable opportunity to learn essential money management skills early on. Dana Baker, the Career Coach at Crestwood, recognized the need for such education at this level and successfully modified the traditional high school reality fair into a more introductory version suitable for seventh graders.
The students were assigned various roles, complete with income, student loan debt, and monthly expenses. Their objective was to build a budget while navigating interactive booths that simulated real-life costs, including housing, transportation, groceries, and utilities. The fair was staffed by volunteer representatives from Nymeo, Frederick County Public Schools' Career Coaches, and Workforce Service staff, who engaged the students in discussions about their financial choices and priorities.
Vicki Johnston, President and CEO of Nymeo, strongly believes that financial education should not only start early but also be captivating. She remarked, 'Reality Fairs empower students to make decisions, learn from their mistakes, and most importantly, experience a learning environment that supports their growth.' The engaging format of the fair was designed to create a memorable educational experience for the students.
One of the most exciting aspects of the fair was the introduction of unforeseen events, termed 'Mayhem.' These scenarios included situations like losing a phone or facing unexpected expenses, which are reflective of the unpredictable nature of adult life. These experiences prompted students to think critically about their choices and the potential consequences of those decisions.
Baker expressed her excitement about witnessing the students step into adulthood through this simulation. 'It was amazing to hear their thought processes behind each financial decision they made and what they would do differently in the future. This experience is sure to leave a lasting impact,' she noted.
The event also garnered attention from Dr. Cheryl Dyson, the Superintendent of Frederick County Public Schools, who attended to witness firsthand the educational impact the Reality Fair provided.
