The Rise of Italian Wine Ambassadors
The Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) is gearing up for an exciting event as it prepares to host the 34th edition of its prestigious Italian Wine Ambassador course. Scheduled to take place in the enchanting city of Verona from April 15-19, this program expects to attract a diverse international group of wine professionals dedicated to elevating their expertise in Italian wines.
A Global Gathering of Wine Professionals
Over four days, participants from across the globe – educators, sommeliers, importers, and journalists – will delve into an enriching itinerary filled with tastings, seminars, and masterclasses. The culmination of this immersive experience is a rigorous exam that, upon passing, grants them the coveted title of Certified Italian Wine Ambassador.
This year's course will be supported by
Guido Berlucchi C. SpA, renowned for crafting the first bottle of Franciacorta, affirming its commitment to wine education. The winery will also present the prestigious Franco Ziliani Prize to the top student, celebrating their dedication and excellence.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Cristina Ziliani, Vice President at Berlucchi, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We believe that study and culture are vital for innovation.” The prize serves as recognition for hard work and passion, aimed at the next generation leading the future of Italian wine.
Beyond individual accolades, the program also boasts the involvement of several notable Italian wine consortia. This collective aims to provide educational content and foster dialogue about Italy’s varied wine regions. Notable contributors include the Consorzio Vini Asolo Montello and Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, which will offer invaluable insights into their respective wine philosophies.
Roberta Bricolo from the Consorzio Tutela Vino Custoza Doc emphasized that fostering wine ambassadors enriches both credibility and global engagement in Italian wine culture. Meanwhile, Paolo Bartoloni of Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco noted that knowledge generation serves as the foundational step in building value and new opportunities for wine regions.
The Future of Italian Wine Education
The incoming class at this year’s Vine Academy is impressive, with around 60 candidates representing over 30 countries around the world. This diversity enriches the educational exchange and collaboration among participants. Chief Scientist Professor Attilio Scienza and VIA Faculty Sarah Heller MW will be leading this class, providing their expertise to navigate through Italy's vast and rich wine landscape, focusing on both native grape varieties and the unique characteristics of regional identities.
This ambitious course not only certifies ambassadors but also aims to create a global network of professionals who can advocate and promote Italian wine on international platforms. As of now, VIA has successfully certified 464 Italian Wine Ambassadors, with an additional subset recognized as Italian Wine Experts.
The event, a hallmark of wine education, represents a significant opportunity for those passionate about wine. The Vinitaly International Academy continues to set the gold standard for wine professionals, providing the tools necessary for a career in the ever-evolving wine industry.
