Zayed National Museum's First Exhibition: 7000 Years of Camel History

The Inaugural Exhibition at Zayed National Museum

The Zayed National Museum is set to unveil its first temporary exhibition, "Tracks Through Time: The Camel in Society, Trade, and Art," in December 2026. This unique exhibition will coincide with the one-year anniversary of the museum and is poised to provide an immersive experience into the profound impact of camels on the culture and history of the UAE and beyond.

Unveiling a 7,000-Year Narrative

Spanning over 7,000 years, the exhibition delves into the extensive and rich history of the camel, showcasing its significance in various societal roles, trade networks, and creative cultures across the Arabian Peninsula. The exhibit will feature a variety of artifacts, including bones from wild camels excavated at the Baynunah archaeological site in Abu Dhabi, dating back to the Neolithic period (around 4500-4000 BC). These rare specimens, on loan from the Abu Dhabi Natural History Museum, mark the first public display of evidence regarding this once-dominant wild camel species.

Dr. Peter Magee, the museum's director, expressed enthusiasm for the inaugural showcase, stating, "We are excited to present our first temporary exhibition that honors the camel's significance within Emirati culture and UAE history in a broader sense." With a goal to deepen public understanding, the exhibit will incorporate the latest scientific findings, offering insights into the domestication of camels and their relationships with humans throughout the centuries.

Key Artifacts and Highlights

The exhibition includes multiple noteworthy elements:
  • - Domesticated Camel Remains: Bones from domesticated camels recovered from the Saruq Al Hadid site in Dubai, dating from the Iron Age (2600-550 BC), will also be displayed, representing some of the earliest evidence for the domestication of camels.
  • - Rare Books and Artwork: Visitors can expect to see a unique children’s book from the 1840s that describes different types of camels and their uses, alongside ancient rock carvings from Fujairah that date back 3,000 years.
  • - Philatelic Exhibits: Various postal stamps from different eras of the United Arab Emirates showcasing camels will also be featured, signifying the animal's lasting impression in Emirati society.
  • - Audiovisual Experiences: The exhibition will offer an array of audiovisual presentations, including rare archival photos, films, and recordings of traditional camel calls, also known as Taghrooda and Alheda'a, which are recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Engagement Activities and Celebrations

"Tracks Through Time" is designed to be part of a larger series of celebratory activities surrounding the museum's anniversary. Interactive workshops, guided tours, and a special anniversary program will be integrated into the event to enhance the visitor experience. Furthermore, an exclusive merchandise offering inspired by the themes of the exhibition will be available.

As the Zayed National Museum embarks on this exciting journey into the cultural depths of the UAE, it invites the public to discover, celebrate, and connect with the traditions woven through the fabric of its camel history. Don't miss this monumental opportunity to explore the vast narratives that these remarkable creatures have shaped throughout the ages.
