A Play Inspired by the Birth of Japan's First Sign Language Circle to be Staged in 2026

'Aruki Hajimeru Toki': A Groundbreaking Play

Team Crescent is set to present its 8th production, 'Aruki Hajimeru Toki,' from June 18 to June 22, 2026, at the Theatre Green BASE Theater in Minami-Ikebukuro, Toshima. Tickets will be available for purchase from April 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM via Confetti, managed by Long Run Planning Co., Ltd. in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

A Tale of Resilience and Hope

This play serves as a prequel to the acclaimed script 'Watashi no Koe ga Kikoemasu ka,' written by Ritsugu Yamawaki, which won the 29th OMS Dramaturgy Award. 'Aruki Hajimeru Toki' depicts the true story of the establishment of Japan’s first sign language circle, 'Mimizuku,' initiated by a nursing student in 1963.

In a society where the use of sign language was largely prohibited, the narrative centers around Kiyohara, a determined nursing student who travels from Kumamoto to Kyoto to pursue her studies. There, she encounters Nishino, a deaf patient who once aspired to be a doctor. Witnessing the vibrant communication among friends using only their hands and facial expressions, Kiyohara is profoundly moved and decides to become a bridge between the hearing and the deaf communities.

A Cultural Shift

The significance of this production resonates with ongoing advancements in Japan's sign language policies, especially since the introduction of the Sign Language Promotion Law in 2025. The upcoming Deaflympics further emphasizes the importance of accessible communication for everyone. This production aims not just to entertain but also to raise awareness about the barriers faced by deaf individuals and promote a nuanced understanding and acceptance of sign language.

The creative team includes director Miho Katayama and co-director Saori Yamada, along with other talented staff members. It aims to offer audiences insights into the struggles and triumphs of the deaf community, fostering a message of inclusivity and empathy.
