The lithium hydroxide was generated from lithium carbonate extracted from Angel Island's lithium claystone deposits. The extraction process utilized Century Lithium’s patent-pending alkaline leach and Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process at the Demonstration Plant. Specifically, the production method involved a batch process employing conventional liming conversion using calcium hydroxide to refine high-purity lithium hydroxide, which achieved a purity of over 99.5%.

In addition to this significant achievement, the company is also exploring a direct lithium conversion (DLC) process aimed at producing lithium hydroxide directly from lithium chloride solutions. This approach would bypass lithium carbonate as an intermediate stage, thereby streamlining operations and minimizing energy consumption as well as operating costs.

As the demand for energy storage solutions both mobile and stationary continues to rise, Century Lithium’s Angel Island project is strategically positioned to become a vital source of critical materials for the United States. Notably, lithium carbonate is an essential component in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, while lithium hydroxide is a key ingredient in high-energy-density Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) batteries. Demonstrating the capability to produce both types of lithium products places Angel Island in a unique position to contribute significantly to American energy independence and ensure a resilient battery supply chain.

Century Lithium Corp. is known for its advanced-stage lithium initiatives and is focused on fully developing the Angel Island lithium project, which hosts one of the largest sedimentary lithium deposits in the United States. Currently, the Angel Island project is in the permitting phase for a comprehensive three-phase feasibility production plan, which is expected to yield an estimated average of 34,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually over a mine life projected at 40 years.
