Randall W. Atkins Takes the Helm of the IEA's Coal Industry Advisory Board

Randall W. Atkins Elected Chair of the IEA's Coal Industry Advisory Board

Ramaco Resources, Inc. recently announced that Randall W. Atkins, the Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, has been unanimously elected to lead the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Coal Industry Advisory Board (CIAB). This significant appointment underlines his influence and expertise in the global coal, energy, and critical minerals sectors, marking a pivotal moment for both Atkins and Ramaco.

The CIAB, established in 1979, serves as the oldest advisory board within the IEA, bringing together prominent leaders from the coal, power, and critical mineral industries to guide the IEA on various pressing issues affecting the sector. Atkins' election was a unanimous decision from both the CIAB Executive Committee and its full membership, demonstrating the strong support and trust he has earned among his peers.

In a statement expressing his gratitude, Atkins stated, “I am deeply honored by the confidence of my CIAB colleagues and especially grateful for their unanimous support to work with them advising in the IEA on matters of importance on our industry.” He emphasized the critical role of coal in global energy production and steelmaking, particularly within the context of evolving technologies that present new opportunities for coal to contribute to the production of rare earth elements and advanced carbon products.

As the world navigates an increasingly complex energy landscape, Atkins recognizes that coal's role must adapt to meet the growing needs for energy security, innovation in power generation, and sustainable practices. He stated, “New technologies are creating opportunities for coal to serve as a source of rare earths and critical minerals, as well as a feedstock for higher value advanced carbon products.” His forward-thinking vision sets the stage for a more nuanced discussion about the future of coal in the global energy dialogue.

Atkins brings to this new role over four decades of experience in energy and commodity development, having founded Ramaco and previously worked as a banker with J.P. Morgan & Co. He is well-versed in the intersection of finance and energy policy, which positions him uniquely to influence discussions at the CIAB.

His prior leadership of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Coal Council (NCC) adds to his credentials as he continues to expand his involvement in national and international energy policy. His past term with the NCC, which advises the Secretary of Energy on coal policy, further illustrates his commitment to enhancing coal’s strategic importance in modern energy discussions.

Furthermore, during his tenure with Ramaco, Atkins has focused on broadening the market role of coal, exploring avenues in advanced carbon materials and critical minerals, aligning his vision with the current industry trends towards sustainability and innovation.

In conjunction with his election, Ramaco’s Vice Chairman, Evan Jenkins, has been designated as Atkins' Associate Member on the CIAB, further solidifying Ramaco's representation and influence within the advisory board's framework. Jenkins expressed confidence in Atkins’ leadership, noting that this position will provide a unique platform to discuss coal's future and associated innovations in the sector.

Overall, Randall W. Atkins' election as Chairman of the IEA's CIAB signifies not just a personal milestone in his career but also highlights Ramaco's rising prominence in the coal and energy sectors. As the world grapples with energy transitions and emerging technologies, Atkins is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the discussions and policies that will navigate the future of coal and its associated industries.
