Introduction
In an effort to promote sustainability, Bright Innovation Inc., based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, is hosting a free webinar aimed at organizations planning to adapt or obtain the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) certification. This session will focus on the primary updates to the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard Version 2.0 and outline necessary actions companies should take in light of these changes.
Overview of the Webinar
The SBTi is known for developing international standards for setting science-based net-zero targets for businesses. The upcoming Version 2.0 is set to undergo a second public consultation draft release by November 2025, with the final version expected to be published in mid-2026. Under the current standard (Version 1.3), new target settings can occur until the end of 2027; however, adoption of Version 2.0 will become mandatory starting January 2028.
Key Changes in Version 2.0
Among the significant updates included in Version 2.0 are the following:
1.
Category A and B Classification: Companies will now be categorized based on size and location.
2.
Mandatory Separation of Scope 1 and Scope 2 Targets: Organizations will have to distinguish between direct and indirect emissions.
3.
Scope 3 Emissions Compliance: Companies will need to address categories where emissions exceed 5%.
4.
100% Low-Carbon Electricity by 2040: A requirement set forth for all companies.
5.
Transition to Validation Model: Companies must shift from a one-time validation to a five-year cycle.
6.
Public Disclosure of Transition Plans: Mandatory for Category A companies.
7.
Introduction of Carbon Removal Targets: This is aimed at addressing residual emissions.
