Saga Education and Brooklyn Lab's Tutoring Initiative
On September 2, 2025, the educational landscape saw a significant development as Saga Education announced its partnership with Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, located in New York City. This collaboration aims to implement a high-impact math tutoring program designed to enhance learning outcomes for hundreds of students in grades six through ten starting this fall.
Saga Education, recognized nationally as a leader in providing high-impact tutoring, will bolster Brooklyn Lab's existing efforts in fostering small-group tutoring sessions. The approach emphasizes personal attention and a commitment to high-quality education. Through this partnership, Saga will take charge of tutor recruitment, management, training, and ongoing coaching, ensuring that tutors are well-prepared and effective in the classroom.
Brooklyn Lab Charter School was established in 2013 with the aspirational mission of eliminating the achievement gap. The school focuses on preparing students not just academically, but also in building leadership skills vital for their success in college and beyond. Currently, this institution caters to 750 students in grades six to twelve, fostering an environment where each scholar is recognized and supported.
As part of this initiative, students will engage in tutoring sessions that last a minimum of 90 minutes per week, with the schedule designed to seamlessly integrate into the school day. The model employed by Saga ensures consistency, as students will work with the same tutors throughout the academic year. Frequent coaching and professional development will allow tutors to tailor their approaches according to each student's unique needs, focusing on filling foundational gaps in understanding and promoting a comprehensive grasp of mathematical concepts.
Dr. Garland Thomas-McDavid, the chief executive of Brooklyn Lab Charter School, shared insights into the collaboration, stating, "Brooklyn Lab tailors the learning experience to each scholar's needs while never wavering from our mission of college preparation, acceptance, and completion. The partnership with Saga Education will help our scholars get additional exposure to grade-level content, while filling foundational gaps and building lasting understanding of mathematical concepts."
Echoing this sentiment, Alan Safran, co-founder and CEO of Saga Education, remarked, "For more than a decade, Saga has demonstrated firsthand how high-impact tutoring changes the trajectory of students' lives. High-impact tutoring is a community investment. When schools and nonprofits work together, we can close learning gaps, boost attendance, and develop the next generation of teachers. We're proud to work alongside Brooklyn Lab to support the unique learning needs of every student."
The efficacy of Saga's tutoring programs is backed by research conducted by the University of Chicago Education Lab, which found that these interventions can result in remarkable gains in student math performance—up to 2.5 years in learning acceleration. Furthermore, students engaged in Saga's programs exhibit improved standardized test scores and greater confidence in their abilities. To date, Saga Education has positively impacted the educational journeys of over 50,000 students across the nation.
