Panasonic Foundation and STEM Next Launch AI Innovation Challenge



In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering the next generation of innovators, the Panasonic Foundation has teamed up with the STEM Next Opportunity Fund to announce the inaugural AI Innovation Challenge. This national competition invites high school students who participate in out-of-school programs to devise innovative solutions to pressing real-world issues using artificial intelligence (AI).

Launched with support from a grant provided by the Panasonic Foundation in 2026, this challenge encourages students to recognize local or global problems and utilize AI as a tool for researching and developing viable solutions. In doing so, participants will enhance their critical thinking skills while aiming for cash prizes that can bolster their respective programs.

A Focus on Essential Issues



The areas of focus are diverse and impactful, covering topics such as climate change resilience, food insecurity, public health, sustainable technology, education accessibility, community safety, and environmental health. This broad scope not only allows students to explore problems that resonate with them but also prepares them for enriching careers in the ever-evolving fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Panasonic Foundation, emphasized the importance of this challenge, stating, “America's future economic strength depends on developing the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and technology leaders. Through the AI Innovation Challenge, we are helping students build the skills and confidence needed to succeed in an AI-driven economy.” This initiative aims not only to build individual capabilities but also to strengthen the talent pipeline that fuels innovation across the U.S.

Educational Guidance and Real-World Applications



Throughout the competition, participating students will receive guidance from program leaders while they take charge of their research, idea development, and project presentations. The challenge will reward outstanding entries that effectively illustrate how afterschool programs can contribute to building AI literacy, reinforcing vital skills, and preparing students for STEM careers.

Ron Ottinger, Executive Director of STEM Next, noted, “This challenge builds on the unique role afterschool programs play in helping young people build durable skills and address real-world challenges through hands-on learning.” With the partnership of Panasonic, participants will responsibly explore the immense potential of AI in tackling issues that matter to them.

Incentives for Innovation



The AI Innovation Challenge will honor up to ten teams for their efforts, distributing cash prizes to encourage participation and innovation. Two first-place winning projects will each receive $5,000 to benefit their program. Three second-place projects can earn $3,000 each, and five third-place projects will be awarded $1,000 each.

Final submissions are due by November 19, 2026, and eligible entries will undergo thorough evaluation by judges from Panasonic and STEM Next. They will be assessed based on a variety of criteria, including innovation, impact, AI collaboration, and clarity of presentation. Winners will be revealed in December 2026.
