AARP Grants Support Community Improvements for Seniors Across Pennsylvania

AARP's Commitment to Community Engagement in Pennsylvania

In a remarkable effort to enhance the quality of life for residents, particularly seniors, AARP has announced the allocation of grants to seven organizations throughout Pennsylvania. This initiative is part of the $4.2 million investment aimed at boosting community livability through the 2025 Community Challenge grants.

Enhancing Community Spaces and Services

These grants, totaling $73,664, are specifically designed to help individuals of all ages, with a focused lens on the needs of older adults. The Community Challenge is now entering its ninth year and has made a considerable impact, having awarded approximately $538,329 in grants since its inception in the state.

Among the key projects funded this year, SACA Development Corporation will receive $9,500 to improve public art installations at a plaza near a senior center. This initiative aims to celebrate the migration stories of Latino older adults with a steel sculpture and interactive QR codes.

In Camp Hill, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation is set to enhance outdoor accessibility with a $15,000 grant. The project focuses on improving access for older adults and individuals with disabilities in state parks through communication campaigns and the introduction of an all-terrain wheelchair.

Moreover, Northampton County will use $12,000 to host digital training events aimed at improving the digital navigation skills of residents aged 50 and older, providing refurbished devices and transportation assistance.

Promoting Safety and Connectivity

Philadelphia sees significant improvements as well, with efforts led by West Mt. Airy Neighbors and Philly Community Wireless. With grants of $12,164 and $20,000 respectively, these projects focus on pedestrian safety enhancements and providing free Wi-Fi services to seniors, while ensuring that digital literacy programs are accessible to older adults in bilingual formats.

Reading Hospital will connect high-fall-risk patients to the UDS CAPABLE program through a $2,500 grant, facilitating essential home modifications for safer living spaces. Similarly, Fishtown Neighbors Association will use their $2,500 grant to conduct a walk audit aimed at identifying and addressing barriers that affect older adults along Girard Avenue.

Long-lasting Benefits for All Ages

"These initiatives are about transforming local ideas into tangible improvements that enhance everyday life," remarked Bill Johnston-Walsh, State Director of AARP Pennsylvania.

Nancy A. LeaMond, AARP's Executive Vice President, emphasized that while these projects are quick to launch, their benefits are enduring. By investing in community solutions, AARP aims to help create neighborhoods where all residents can thrive, catering especially to the often-overlooked rural areas.

The funds not only aim to improve public spaces and transportation but also seek to connect individuals digitally, thus fostering a stronger sense of community. With projects funded in all 50 states and U.S. territories, AARP continues to exemplify its commitment to making communities more livable for people of every generation.
