Amazon Delivery Drivers at DRI1 Facility Unite for Teamsters Representation

In a bold display of collective action, over 90 Amazon delivery drivers at the DRI1 facility in Providence, Rhode Island, have officially announced their unionization with Teamsters Local 251. This historic move marks them as the first Amazon workers in the state to organize under the Teamsters union, representing a significant step in the fight for labor rights within one of the richest companies in the world.

This announcement came following a coordinated march led by the drivers, showcasing their determination to secure a collective bargaining agreement that promises better pay, improved health care, and enhanced safety measures. Randy Korgan, Director of the Teamsters Amazon Division, emphasized the significance of this action, stating, "Amazon workers across the country are fed up with this company's greed and neglect." He further noted that every Amazon facility, regardless of its size, can be a platform for workers to demand fairness and accountability from the corporate giant.

The DRI1 facility is Amazon’s largest last-mile distribution center in Rhode Island, playing a crucial role in the e-retailer’s operations. The union organizing campaign at DRI1 is part of a broader initiative by the Teamsters to hold Amazon accountable for its working conditions. Notably, prior efforts in Rhode Island resulted in the passage of the Warehouse Worker Protection Act earlier this summer, showcasing a growing resistance against unfair labor practices in the state.

Matt Taibi, the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 251 and Teamsters Eastern Region Vice President, expressed pride in the DRI1 drivers’ bravery. He remarked, "DRI1 delivery drivers are putting their feet down and joining the most important organizing effort in America today." His statement underscores the increasing momentum of labor movements across the nation, especially in the face of corporate power.

One of the drivers, Fred German, shared his frustrations, highlighting that despite working for one of the wealthiest corporations, employees often receive insufficient wages and inadequate attention to safety concerns. "We have had enough. We are proud to join the Teamsters and Amazon workers across the country demanding we get treated with the respect every human being deserves," he declared.

With this unionization, DRI1 drivers join a growing network of over 10,000 workers nationwide who have also sought representation through the Teamsters union. Their collective demands are centered on fair labor practices, pushing back against the narrative that Amazon has upheld as it expands its reach and influence across the logistics sector.
