An Artistic Celebration of Tanka Poetry
On March 29, 2026, BS Asahi aired a special program titled 'GINZA DIAMOND SHIRAISHI presents Echo: A Tanka Gift to You', announcing the winners of a Tanka poetry contest. The competition encouraged viewers to write poetry centered around the theme of 'togetherness', receiving an impressive total of 2,338 entries. This celebration of poetic creativity coincided with the 'Ariake Spring Festival', held at the recently opened TOKYO DREAM PARK, where a special booth featured the award-winning poems and offered visitors interactive experiences.
Tanka, a traditional Japanese form of poetry known for its elegance and subtlety, continues to capture the hearts of many, including younger generations. GINZA DIAMOND SHIRAISHI, operated by NEW ART Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, has emphasized the significance of expressing one's feelings through words, particularly in the context of bridal jewelry. The program's hosts included popular young poet Seishun Aomatsu, also known for his YouTube presence, alongside rising stars like Ito Kon and singer-songwriter Kayoko Yoshizawa, who contributed their unique interpretations of the submitted work.
The contest's culmination revealed three poems that stood out among the many submissions:
1.
"Heavier Than Love Filling the Void in My Left Hand, Bringing Light..." - Mikasa Yama de Tsuki
2.
"What It Means to 'Meet' in Laughter and Tears, You’re Aligned with Me..." - Omiashi Futoko
3.
"Comfortable Silence Exists, Coming to the Library Alone, Leaving Together..." - Kayabanashiko
The excitement of the event carries over to TOKYO DREAM PARK, which features an engaging experience booth where guests can create their Tanka poetry. Participants can select words from cards representing the traditional syllable structure of Tanka (5-7-5-7-7), crafting a poem uniquely their own. With a stroke of luck, they could win an original hand cream or receive a commemorative bookmark bearin GINZA DIAMOND SHIRAISHI's award-winning poems. The event allows visitors to showcase their completed Tanka on social media with the hashtag #あなたに贈る短歌, entering them into a draw for fabulous prizes.
The event’s location also featured a beautifully wrapped escalator adorned with selected poems from the contest, delighting visitors as they ascended from the 6th to the 7th floor. This enchanting installation complemented the festival's theme of connection, emphasizing the deep interplay of words and emotions that Tanka embodies.
The 'Ariake Spring Festival' at TOKYO DREAM PARK runs from March 27 to May 10, 2026, with free admission available. While the booth will not hold daily draws from April 6 to 24, visitors can still enjoy the poetry experience. The park is accessible via a short walk from Tokyo Big Sight Station and Kokusai-tenjijo Station.
