The Global Video Media Forum: Fostering Collaboration and Voices from the Global South

Global Video Media Forum: A Platform for Collaboration and Empowerment

The 12th Global Video Media Forum (VMF) commenced on Tuesday in the coastal city of Quanzhou, located in Fujian Province, eastern China. This two-day event was organized by CCTV+, the media arm of China Media Group (CMG), under the theme "Intelligence Without Borders, Vision Beyond the Horizon - The Role of Media in Cultural Communication and Exchange."

The forum attracted around 200 representatives from 87 media organizations across over 60 countries and regions, showcasing Quanzhou's historical significance as a trading port and its UNESCO World Heritage site. This significant gathering marked a pivotal moment for fostering international media collaboration and amplifying the narratives of the Global South.

Unveiling the Joint Initiative

A highlight of the forum was the announcement of the Joint Initiative for Dialogue and Media Cooperation among Southern Nations. This initiative, put forth by CMG in collaboration with various broadcasting unions including the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union and the African Union of Broadcasting, seeks to construct a cohesive narrative framework for the Global South. By enhancing mutual learning and exchanges, the aim is to promote shared prosperity and uphold the media's responsibility to foster justice and representation for these regions on the global stage.

Cultural Exchange and Global Promotion

The forum not only discussed pressing issues in the media landscape but also showcased the vibrant culture of China through a global promotional video for CMG's annual Spring Festival Gala 2025. Since its inception in 1983, this gala has become a hallmark of Chinese New Year celebrations and one of the most-watched television events worldwide, serving as a crucial platform for promoting Chinese culture internationally.

Furthermore, the forum featured four high-quality films and documentaries designed to give audiences a deeper understanding of Chinese daily life, environmental conservation efforts, and significant space exploration projects. As part of its broader outreach, CMG also announced future plans to project films and TV programs across Central Asia, Europe, and the Americas in 2025, ensuring a panoramic view of China's development is shared globally.

Celebrating 75 Years of the People's Republic of China

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, CMG launched the "China Up Close" campaign. This initiative aims to present China's dynamic culture and socio-economic development through various media formats and encourages both domestic and international reporters to engage with these narratives firsthand.

The International Communication Season

Together with Quanzhou, historically known as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, CMG debuted the International Communication Season during the forum. This initiative combines ancient trade routes with modern storytelling to enhance China’s global communication influence further.

Innovative Technologies: A Key Focus

Attendees were especially captivated by the "Jingcai Voice" experience hall, which showcased cutting-edge 3D audio technology applications. The forum included various sessions such as "How New Technologies Enhance Media" and "Cultural Exchanges Open New Horizons for International Communication." These sessions delved into the governance of AI within the media sector and explored innovative communication platforms using smart technologies, all aimed at building a brighter future for the digital civilization in the Global South.

Through these discussions and presentations, the VMF not only emphasizes collaboration but also highlights the importance of understanding and inclusivity in the global media landscape, marking a significant milestone in promoting diverse narratives from the Global South.
