The Garden at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo: A Journey Through Time
Fujita Kanko Inc., a pioneer in Japan's hospitality industry, has been actively involved in providing enriching experiences through various business sectors such as accommodation, resorts, weddings, and leisure activities. Founded in 1955, the company is set to celebrate its 70th anniversary on November 7, 2025. The upcoming year of 2026 marks a significant milestone as it commemorates 100 years since the start of the Showa era. To honor this commemoration, Fujita Kanko will present a series of initiatives that reflect on its history and the cultural significance of the Showa period.
The Serene Landscape of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo
The fourth installment in this series highlights the exquisite garden of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, a space that seamlessly blends natural beauty with historical essence. Named ‘Bōkyōbashi’ or ‘The Bridge of Nostalgia,’ this serene garden showcases intricate water features, including the iconic 'Unkin-chi' pond and the tranquil 'Chōshū-baku' waterfall, allowing visitors to connect with the spirit of nature and reminisce about their hometowns.
A Historical Journey
The origins of the garden can be traced back to 1878, when Prince Yamagata Aritomo fell in love with the area, known as “Tsubaki-yama.” With a passion for gardening, he invested his personal wealth to establish the grounds and a residence, naming it ‘Chinzanso.’ His vision included detailed planning and a unique approach that sought to incorporate the surrounding nature into the garden’s design—a naturalistic style that contrasted with the traditional Japanese gardens of that era, which often featured symbolic arrangements of stones.
Additionally, Prince Yamagata ventured boldly into new landscaping techniques by introducing lawns, a concept that was revolutionary for Japanese gardens at the time. The similarities between the geography of his hometown, Hagi, and the garden of Chinzanso further showcase the deep personal connection he had to the land he nurtured.
The Monumental Legacy
Inside the garden stands the ‘Chinzanso Monument,’ erected in 1897, which encapsulates the sentiments of Prince Yamagata when he named this beautiful area. He mused, “I wonder what kind of person will live here in the future. I can only hope that they will cherish nature as I have.” This monument serves as a historical testament to his profound love for the garden and the natural environment.

The Birth of Tokyo's Sea of Clouds
In an innovative move, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo has redefined the Japanese garden by evolving it into an experiential and cultural platform. Launched in 2020, the ‘Tokyo Sea of Clouds’ has captured the beauty of a natural phenomenon, creating a captivating experience within the garden environment. By recreating the atmospheric conditions that lead to cloud formation, this installation offers a new way to appreciate the garden, merging the wonders of nature with contemporary technology.
Botanical aesthetics and cultural heritage resonate through the ‘Tokyo Sea of Clouds,’ which has been recognized for shaping a sustainable model of garden culture. This initiative has earned the ‘Good Design Award 2025’ for its efforts in preserving and promoting Japanese garden traditions.
An Enhanced Experience of the Tokyo Sea of Clouds
Continuing to elevate its offerings, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo will launch ‘Tokyo Sea of Clouds – Yagumo’ on July 1, 2026. This refined concept introduces a three-dimensional cloud display, enriching visitors' experience further with thematic meals and sweets inspired by the aesthetics of the clouds.
The ‘Tokyo Sea of Clouds – Yagumo’ will be available throughout the year, allowing guests to indulge in a multi-sensory journey through the restaurant and garden.
