Celebrating 46 Years of DABO



DABO Inc., formerly known as The Detroit Association of Black Organizations, is thrilled to announce its 46th anniversary, showcasing over four decades of dedication to fostering growth and empowerment within the Detroit community. Founded in 1979, DABO has been a cornerstone in metro Detroit, championing self-sufficiency, wellness, and community advocacy through innovative programs and a robust network of over 130 member organizations.

To commemorate this significant milestone, DABO will host its hallmark event, the 46th Annual State of the Race, from April 17 to April 19, 2025. This multi-day celebration not only pays tribute to the resilience and achievements of the Detroit community but also raises essential funds to support DABO’s critical programming. The diverse activities lined up for the event serve as a nod to the longstanding commitment to education, empowerment, and civic engagement.

The Event Highlights



Rev. Horace Sheffield III, Executive Director of DABO, stated, "The State of the Race is more than just an event—it's a movement. For 46 years, we've united people to inform, inspire, and spark change. As we look to the future, our commitment to community unity, empowerment, and opportunity is stronger than ever."

April 17 – Comedy Night featuring stars like Don "DC" Curry and Henry Welch

April 19 – Community Forum titled "Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders"
  • - Time: 11 a.m.

This year's forum will feature a keynote address from renowned former MSNBC correspondent Joy-Ann Reid, noted for her insightful takes on pressing national issues. The forum aims to gather thought leaders, activists, and community members to devise actionable strategies for nurturing the forthcoming generation of leaders.

April 19 – Neosoulsations Concert featuring Grammy Award-winning artist Chrisette Michele, celebrated RB duo Kindred the Family Soul, along with a special appearance by comedian Bruce Bruce

  • - Location: Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, 350 Madison St., Detroit, MI
