Where Energy Meets Matter: Exploring Art and Science
The Frederick Arts Council is proud to present a unique art exhibition titled "Where Energy Meets Matter: Exploring the Frontiers of Science." This exciting display will be open to the public until January 20, 2026, at the Y Arts Center's Gallery 115, located at 115 E Church St, Frederick, Maryland.
This interdisciplinary exhibition brings together the innovative minds of artists and scientists, showcasing their creative interpretations and collaborative spirit. The theme focuses on the dynamic relationship between energy and matter, drawing inspiration from cutting-edge research conducted at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) and other local scientific institutions, fostered by the National Cancer Institute.
Louise Kennelly, Executive Director of the Frederick Arts Council, expressed enthusiasm for the exhibition's potential to shed light on the intersection of artistic and scientific endeavors. She noted, "Our world faces many challenges, and through this exhibition, we aim to inspire collaborative, optimistic approaches that merge world-class art with world-class science here in Frederick."
Among the participating artists are both local talents and renowned figures. Among them, Lisa Shierer and Erik Demaine stand out; the latter is not only a mathematician but also an accomplished artist, recognized as a MacArthur Fellow and the youngest professor ever hired by MIT at the age of 20. Demaine's work exemplifies the intricate dance between mathematic concepts and artistic expression.
Frederick County hosts significant scientific advancements, particularly at the FNLCR, which leverages state-of-the-art technology at its Advanced Technology Research Facility located at Fort Detrick. Artists involved in this exhibition were encouraged to explore various project case studies from the laboratory, grounding their pieces in the fascinating world of scientific inquiry.
Dr. Ethan Dmitrovsky, the laboratory director of FNLCR and president of Leidos Biomedical Research, expressed gratitude for the inspiration drawn from scientific endeavors. He remarked, "Scientists and artists share a fascination with the natural world. While they portray their insights differently, both seek to unveil the mysteries of our universe."
The exhibition features a diverse range of artworks from numerous artists, including Susan Aldworth, Shannon Beatty, Karin Birch, Robert Birkenes, Gabriella Boros, Jack Bradshaw, and many more. Their creations delve into themes of physics, biology, and the unseen forces that link energy and matter.
Furthermore, anatomical prints borrowed from the Frederick Book Arts Center are on display, enriching the conversation between science and artistic representation.
The Frederick Arts Council has long been dedicated to fostering a vibrant artistic community within Frederick County. It strives to create opportunities for artistic expression through grants, scholarships, and various community initiatives like the Sky Stage and the Frederick Festival of the Arts. These programs highlight the critical role that arts play in the local culture.
