Experience the Enchantment of YOKAI Culture at KAGOSHIMA This Summer

KAGOSHIMA YOKAI Exhibition: An Enchanting Journey

The KAGOSHIMA YOKAI Exhibition, produced by Hitohata, has exceeded an impressive 30,000 visitors since its opening on July 3, 2026, and will run until August 31, 2026. This innovative event takes place at the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of History and Art, specifically in Hall 1, and aims to provide a unique experience that combines enjoyment, education, and deeper engagement with Japanese yokai culture.

The landmark exhibition was celebrated with a special ceremony attended by family members, including the 30,000th guest from Kagoshima City. This visitor shared their enthusiasm about the exhibits, especially showcasing the diverse imagery of yokai from legendary artist Shigeru Mizuki's yokai visual encyclopedia.

What to Expect

This immersive experience is unlike any other, featuring cutting-edge video technology and three-dimensional sculptures that bring to life the various depictions of yokai from Japan's Edo and Meiji periods. Attendees will encounter fantastic creatures such as Tengu, Kappa, and Yama-uba (Mountain Witch) through meticulous artwork from the Hyakki Yagyō Ehon (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) and Hyakumonogatari (100 Stories) series.

Using state-of-the-art digital tools like 3DCG and projection mapping, the exhibition creates a vivid atmosphere where these creatures seem to leap off the screens into the audience's reality. Additionally, the 3D sculptures offer a tactile experience, allowing visitors to interact with the yokai in a tangible way.

Furthermore, in collaboration with notable institutions such as the Iwasaki Library in Nishio City and the Yokai Museum in Shozu, the exhibit provides insights into the fascinating universe of yokai culture, their historical significance, and how they connect to contemporary pop culture.

As the exhibition has successfully captivated over 250,000 visitors in previous iterations held in major cities like Nagoya and Tokyo, it promises to continue fascinating audiences of all ages this summer in Kagoshima.
