Pittsburgh Homecoming: A Weekend of Culture and Community Awaits

Pittsburgh Homecoming: A Weekend to Reconnect

Pittsburgh Tomorrow is set to launch the inaugural Pittsburgh Homecoming, taking place from September 18 to 20. This innovative initiative, organized by a nonprofit dedicated to reversing the region's population decline, aims to welcome back former Pittsburgh residents and prospective newcomers for a weekend filled with valuable connections and cultural experiences.

The event kicks off with a Friday evening discussion featuring prominent city leaders and creatives, setting the tone for a weekend celebration under the theme "Pittsburgh, Tomorrow: A City on the Rise." Guests will gather at Rockwell Park for an opening night party, showcasing a progressive Pittsburgh through interactive art, live music, dance performances, and culinary delights from some of the region's best chefs.

On Saturday, participants will have the chance to get their hands dirty and make a lasting environmental impact by joining local youth from the Pittsburgh Tomorrow Leadership Corps. Together with organizations like Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Tree Pittsburgh, attendees will plant 250 trees in celebration of America's 250th anniversary. Each attendee will plant a tree, which can serve as a lasting memory to revisit during their next trip to the Steel City.

Throughout the weekend, a range of cultural experiences await participants with the Pittsburgh Culture Crawl, where local attractions will open their doors to guests. The first 250 out-of-town guests who sign up at pittsburghtomorrow.org/homecoming will receive complimentary tickets to numerous events and venues, including a Pirates vs. Brewers baseball game, the prestigious Carnegie International art exhibition, a stunning visit to Fallingwater, the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, the Phipps Annual Flower Show, and many more.

To complement the Homecoming, the event coincides with StartUP PGH, a conference for innovators taking place from September 14 to 18. This gathering emphasizes the significance of bringing together business minds and encouraging economic growth within the region. Doug Heuck, the founder of Pittsburgh Tomorrow, expressed the vision for the event: “Bringing everyone together is a big step toward leveraging our strengths and letting the world know why Pittsburgh is the place to visit, start a business, and succeed.”

Pittsburgh faces a unique challenge due to a historical population decline, marked by the industrial collapse of the 1980s and a significant exodus of youth. Today, the city leads the U.S. in natural population decline and remains one of the few regions losing jobs over the last decade, making events like the Homecoming all the more crucial.

Caroline Fisher, Head of Storytelling at Pittsburgh Tomorrow, highlighted the pull of the city for former residents. “Pittsburgh has a strong pull on former residents—I’ve experienced it firsthand as a boomerang myself. We want to make Pittsburgh the most welcoming city in the country, and giving people great reasons to come for a weekend is just the start.”

This Homecoming event represents a significant opportunity to invite past residents back to their hometown and showcase the vibrant culture, history, and community that define Pittsburgh today. With a variety of experiences awaiting, this weekend promises to be a memorable one that could set the stage for renewed connections and the revitalization of the area.
