Jean-Marc Nasr Takes the Helm as Independent Chair at GHGSat
GHGSat Announces Jean-Marc Nasr as New Independent Chair of the Board
In a significant shift for governance at GHGSat, the prominent satellite company, Jean-Marc Nasr has been appointed as the Independent Chair of its Board of Directors. This decision, effective immediately, also entails a deliberate separation of the roles of Chair and Chief Executive Officer, with current CEO Stéphane Germain retaining his position.
Jean-Marc Nasr brings to the table an impressive background with nearly 40 years of leadership experience in satellite technology, Earth observation, and international space programs. His most recent role was as Executive Vice President and Head of Space Systems at Airbus Defence and Space, where he managed one of the largest commercial and institutional space portfolios globally. Furthermore, he has previously held positions such as Senior Vice President of marketing and sales for the Airbus Defense Space division across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, along with serving as President and CEO of Spot Image, where he was pivotal in marketing the imagery from the SPOT satellite constellation.
The decision to separate the Chair and CEO roles reflects the evolving governance structure that GHGSat seeks to establish as it embarks on its next growth chapter. By delineating these responsibilities, each leader can focus on their strengths; the Chair will provide independent oversight and strategic counsel, while the CEO will concentrate on executing the company's vision and overseeing daily operations.
Stéphane Germain, the founder of GHGSat, notes the importance of this transition: "As GHGSat continues to experience growth in scale and global reach, now is an opportune moment to implement a governance framework that aligns with our aspirations." He adds, “Jean-Marc’s extensive expertise in developing commercial enterprises through satellite technology positions him as a crucial partner in our pursuit of further growth.”
Jean-Marc Nasr echoed these sentiments, expressing his enthusiasm about the company's unique positioning in the realm of greenhouse gas monitoring. He emphasizes that the existing satellite constellation represents an unparalleled capability at a time when transparency regarding emissions is more crucial than ever. "I look forward to collaborating with Stéphane and the Board to bolster our management team as we strive to amplify our global influence," said Nasr.
The transition to separate Chair and CEO roles follows a governance model increasingly adopted across North America, notably among Canadian corporations. This framework enables the CEO to fully dedicate themselves to the company's strategies while the Chair performs duties related to independent oversight, governance, and advisory functions.
Having founded GHGSat in 2011, Stéphane Germain has steered the company through the crucial stages of developing and launching the world’s first dedicated constellation for monitoring greenhouse gases. Under his leadership, the company grew to over 120 employees and deployed 15 satellites, capable of detecting emissions from specific sources. Additionally, GHGSat has formed data partnerships with industry entities, including some of the world’s largest oil, gas, and industrial firms.
