Colangelo & Partners to Enhance Avignonesi Winery's U.S. Presence

Avignonesi Winery and Its New Partnership

Avignonesi, one of the most innovative wineries in Tuscany, has officially joined forces with Colangelo & Partners, a premier agency specializing in fine wines and lifestyle branding. This collaboration aims to enhance Avignonesi's visibility in the United States and solidify its reputation as a benchmark producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The partnership underscores the winery’s commitment to sustainability, community responsibility, and high-quality winemaking practices.

A Vision for Growth

In a statement, Matteo Giustiniani, CEO and Winemaker at Avignonesi, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership. He emphasized that the winery’s scale provides an opportunity to significantly impact both the environment and the community. Giustiniani believes that larger estates can uphold the integrity of craftsmanship while increasing their responsibility. Through a dedication to agricultural honesty and regenerative practices, Avignonesi is set to lead the way in responsible viticulture.

Founded in 1974 and named after the Avignonesi family, the estate has been a leading force in Montepulciano for decades. Under the new management of Virginie Saverys, who took over in 2009, Avignonesi has adopted organic and biodynamic practices, focusing on long-term environmental stewardship and earning the certification of a Benefit Corporation. Currently, under the guidance of Saverys’ children, Basile and Eline Aloy, the estate covers an impressive 400 acres across Montepulciano and Cortona. Notably, it has reduced its carbon emissions by 45% since 2018 and has transitioned to utilizing 80% renewable energy resources, in addition to planting over 3,000 trees to promote biodiversity.

A Focus on Authenticity

Avignonesi not only prioritizes sustainable practices but also aims to revive the reputation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This wine has often been overshadowed and confused with Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, yet it is witnessing a resurgence thanks to its rich, terroir-driven flavor profile—the wine is primarily made from Sangiovese grapes that offer a balance of structure, refinement, and age-worthiness. This aligns perfectly with the growing appreciation among American consumers for wines characterized by their authenticity and freshness.

Meanwhile, the estate continues to respect its historical roots in Cortona, where it produces notable wines like the Desiderio Toscana IGT, a distinguished Merlot renowned since its debut vintage. This wine encapsulates the unique characteristics of the estate’s clay-rich soils and has gained appreciable recognition as the Merlot category itself experiences a renaissance in the U.S. market.

A New Era in Fine Wine

Megan DeAngelo, Italian Group Director at Colangelo & Partners, highlighted Avignonesi's unique position within Tuscany. She noted the rarity of a large estate operating with such clarity and purposeful direction. The winery’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship, paired with wines that resonate with American audiences, positions it as a formidable leader—not only within the Montepulciano region but also in broader discussions surrounding the future of fine wine.

In addition to the celebrated Desiderio, Avignonesi produces various other wines, including the acclaimed Poggetto di Sopra Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. The sheer quality of these wines accentuates the characteristics of their surrounding environment, particularly the unique clay soil that defines their terroir.

For wine aficionados and newcomers alike, Avignonesi embodies a conscious evolution within the Tuscan wine landscape, seamlessly blending tradition with modern innovation. By fostering a community devoted to sustainability and quality, Avignonesi not only cultivates its vineyards but also nurtures a network of advocates who share its values.
