CIEE's Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the Scan Design Foundation (SDF) have officially opened applications for their inaugural Environmental Sustainability Internship, taking place in Denmark. This exciting opportunity is designed for eight high-achieving American college students who are eager to delve into the world of environmental sustainability.
Program Overview
The internship lasts for eight weeks and will be based in Copenhagen, where selected interns will work with local companies that are pioneers in implementing sustainable business practices. Each intern will not only gain hands-on experience but will also participate in a 6-credit internship seminar that enhances academic knowledge while providing practical skills applicable in the workforce.
Funding for this program is comprehensive, covering the entire cost of participation including airfare and a living stipend, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder this unique chance for learning and professional growth.
Application Details
Eligible applicants must be Pell Grant recipients and will be chosen based on their academic accomplishments as well as their interest in environmental and sustainability practices. Students are encouraged to express their passion for these topics in their application. The deadline for submitting applications is set for November 21, 2025, with the announcement of the selected cohort occurring mid-December.
For students who apply but do not gain selection for the program, CIEE offers a consolation grant of $1,500. This can be utilized toward any CIEE summer or semester study abroad program, further underscoring their commitment to making international education accessible.
Learning Experience in Denmark
Interns will immerse themselves in Denmark's innovative sustainability culture. They will not only engage in their internships but will also have opportunities to network at local sustainability startup hubs, enhancing their understanding of the practical applications of sustainability in business. The companies involved in this internship range widely, from those producing eco-friendly cleaning supplies to firms focused on developing advanced biomass gasification technologies.
CIEE President and CEO, James P. Pellow, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the Scan Design Foundation, stating that the environmental sustainability internship aims to foster goodwill between Denmark and the United States while equipping students with essential skills for addressing global environmental challenges.
Fidelma McGinn, the President of Scan Design Foundation, highlighted the significance of this internship in educating American students about Denmark's advances in sustainability, thereby enriching cross-cultural exchanges that have been a hallmark of the foundation’s mission for over two decades.
