Connecting Local Memories to the Future
In a remarkable initiative to preserve and celebrate local history, the final event for the project "Kaichiku Teiryujyo @ Takashimadaira" will be held on July 5, 2026, at the old Takashimadaira Elementary School in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo. This project, led by ASIBA, ReLink, and the Urban Design Center Takashimadaira (UDCTak), aims to treat the demolition of buildings not as an end, but a beginning, creating opportunities to connect to new values through the memories held in these structures.
Overview of Kaichiku Teiryujyo Project
The Kaichiku Teiryujyo is an innovative project that seeks to utilize buildings on the verge of demolition. Rather than discarding memories and materials, this initiative collects and transforms them into new opportunities for the community and artists. As the old Takashimadaira Elementary School is slated for demolition due to urban revitalization plans, this project stands as a temporary platform where local residents and artists gather to carry memories into the future.
The Old Takashimadaira Elementary School
Opened in 1979 and closed in 2007, this school lies adjacent to what was once known as the largest housing complex in the East, Takashimadaira Danchi. Its fate has remained uncertain for a long time, but now, in tandem with urban renewal strategies, its demolition is planned for this year. The Kaichiku Teiryujyo initiative encourages artists and experts to collaborate on various innovative projects that engage with the memories of the school and its community.
The Final Event: What to Expect
1. Exhibition of Artists' Works
From June 15 to July 3, works created by ten emerging artists and creators, all reflecting on the theme of the school's memories, will be displayed throughout the school’s corridors and classrooms. On the day of the event, artists will also conduct gallery walks and performances, enriching the experience for attendees.
2. Upcycling Workshop: "Pop-up Rinne.bar"
This interactive workshop invites participants to create small artworks using leftover wood and metal parts from the school’s demolition. With no need for specialized tools, everyone from children to adults can enjoy transforming old materials into new treasures. The workshop will run in two sessions, encouraging creativity and resourcefulness.
3. Free Giveaway Event
From 11 AM to 5 PM, items such as furniture, books, and play equipment remaining in the school will be available for free pickup. This event offers a chance for attendees to take home memories from the school, especially nostalgic items for former students.
4. Film Screening: "Haikou Cinema"
Celebrate the launch of the "Traveling Cinema" at the old elementary school. This two-part screening will explore innovative forms of cinema and offer a unique viewing experience. The admission fee is 1500 yen, and re-entry is permitted.
5. Public Strategy Meetings
During the event, a series of strategy meetings will address important topics such as demolition, urban development, and upcycling. These meetings will connect practitioners, researchers, and officials to discuss how to derive value from demolition practices, positioning the Kaichiku Teiryujyo initiative within the context of creative city policies.
