Explore the 'Zannen' Creatures at Sunshine Aquarium's Special Exhibition

Special Exhibition: 'Zannen na Ikimonoten 3'

The Sunshine Aquarium in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, is set to launch its special exhibition, 'Zannen na Ikimonoten 3', in collaboration with Takahashi Shoten's best-selling series 'Zannen na Ikimonotachi' from March 13 to November 23. This exhibition is the third of its kind, dedicated to showcasing unique and somewhat unfortunate creatures that are nonetheless endearing.

The 'Zannen na Ikimonotachi' series has sold over 5.46 million copies, becoming a beloved staple in children's literature. Remarkably, this year marks its 10th anniversary, and it has repeatedly ranked in the top 10 of the annual 'Children's Book Election'. The previous two exhibitions at the aquarium drew a remarkable total of 250,000 visitors, demonstrating the enduring appeal of these quirky creatures.

Visitors will have the chance to see around 25 selected creatures featured in the first through ten volumes of the series, as well as exclusive illustrations created for this exhibition. The displays will be arranged into seven themed areas focusing on various kinds of 'zannen' traits, such as 'Zannen na Kawaii' (lovably unfortunate) and 'Yudan shiteru to Zannen' (those who suffer mishaps due to carelessness).

One of the most popular attractions returning from the previous exhibition is the Kakemushi's odor experience, allowing visitors to experience the rather unfortunate odor created by a stink bug as it defends itself against predators. This unique feature was a hit previously and is expected to be a crowd-pleaser once again.

Featured Creatures

  • - Harisennbon (Pufferfish)
- Zannen Ability: When inflated, it can't swim or eat!
  • - Grass Frog
- Zannen Situation: It can fall from leaves due to raindrops!
  • - Fryshman's Glass Frog (and other original 'Zannen' creatures!)
- A spotlight on original entries not found in the book series, providing insights and anecdotes from the aquarium staff.

Interactive Exhibit

Expanded opportunities for engagement await. The exhibition will allow guests to both see and experience the zannen aspects of these creatures firsthand. This includes revisiting the Kakemushi’s smell experience corner, where the fragrance of a stink bug has been meticulously recreated based on feedback from aromatic professionals. Visitors will be encouraged to see just how 'stinky' this little creature can be!

Additionally, guests can enjoy a sneak peek into the behavior of the Minami Koarigai (South American anteater) through video presentations, showcasing how it showcases its capabilities when threatened. This will provide an entertaining and educational experience, captivating audiences with the unique characteristics of these enchanting creatures.

Exclusive Merchandise

The exhibition will feature exclusive merchandise inspired by creatures on display, including:
  • - Acrylic Keychains featuring various zannen creatures (¥770 each).
  • - Gummies in a multicolor case styled as Fryshman's Glass Frog (¥990).
  • - Capsule toys with mini pouches, perfect for organizing essentials (¥500 each).
