Innovative Use of LED in Virtual Production at GDC 2026

Introduction to CalibFX at GDC 2026

From March 9-13, 2026, San Francisco hosted the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2026), where Miraxyz SAS presented their innovative camera offset calculation software, CalibFX. The demonstration highlighted how XR (extended reality) and AR (augmented reality) can seamlessly function as a unified stage, providing immersive real-time experiences.

What is CalibFX?

CalibFX is a calibration software tailored for virtual production that features lens calibration and camera offset calculation capabilities. Developed by Miraxyz SAS, this revolutionary product was launched in Japan by its authorized distributor, Spice Co., Ltd., in December 2025. By using CalibFX, filmmakers can eliminate discrepancies between live-action footage and computer-generated images (CGI), ensuring both elements align perfectly. The software supports a wide array of cameras, lenses, 3D engines, and camera tracking systems, making it versatile for many virtual studios.

How CalibFX Aligns LED Walls and Cameras

To align LED walls, CalibFX uses AR reference patterns displayed on the wall itself. The user captures images using CalibFX, and the software analyzes these images to calculate the camera's self-position (offset values) based on the LED wall reference. This data is then input into the 3D engine's camera transform, securing accurate perspective, scale, and parallax across both XR and AR layers. By accommodating various camera tracking systems, CalibFX becomes a powerful tool for achieving XR and set extension with engines like Unreal Engine and Aximmetry.

Flawless Integration of Physical and Virtual Worlds

By precisely aligning the physical space (LED wall) with the virtual environment, discrepancies at the boundaries are eliminated, allowing for dynamic XR performances. During the GDC demonstration, attendees witnessed a virtual character moving seamlessly between the LED wall and its surroundings, showcasing a deeply immersive XR experience. This presentation highlighted how effective the integration of CalibFX could be in producing visually captivating content.

Utilizing OptiTrack and RigFX for Camera Tracking

To ensure camera tracking accuracy, the system utilized OptiTrack's optical motion capture technology. An OptiTrack Wired CinePuck was mounted on the camera, merging optical and IMU data for precise location tracking and real-time lens metadata aggregation via RigFX. This system outputted integrated data through OpenTrackIO to the rendering engine, guaranteeing stable tracking, low latency, and consistent results throughout the production process.
