Driving Cultural Heritage Management with Technology
In an impressive initiative, Tokyo has partnered with Boldright Inc., led by CEO Akihiro Miyamoto, to leverage digital transformation (DX) in managing its cultural heritage. The collaboration is part of the 'Tokyo On-Site Dialogue Startup Collaborative Project,' aiming to address various challenges within the municipal framework using innovative solutions from startups. The centerpiece of this collaboration is the 'Platinum Map' tourism DX platform, designed to streamline the management of cultural assets and enhance public engagement.
A Significant Efficiency Boost
The innovative platform has not only facilitated administrative tasks but has also achieved a remarkable reduction in operational workload. Through the launch of a cultural asset management system—dubbed the Cultural Heritage DX Platform—Boldright and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have successfully cut down the operational labor for the annual 'Tokyo Cultural Heritage Week' by approximately 86%. Prior to this initiative, handling each task could take up to 18 minutes; post-digitization, this time has plummeted to just 2.5 minutes.
The Role of Digital Mapping
Before the introduction of the digital platform, the information about cultural assets was difficult to navigate. Although data was made available on a website, users faced challenges due to the limited presentation format, which only provided a flat map and list view. This lack of clarity contributed to the under-recognition of Tokyo's rich cultural heritage.
To remedy this, the team utilized the Platinum Map to create an easy-to-navigate digital map that aggregates information about cultural assets throughout the city. Launched in conjunction with the Cultural Heritage Week, this digital map not only improved visibility but also created a more interactive experience for users. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising its user-friendly features.
Increasing Engagement through Gamification
The rollout of the Tokyo Cultural Heritage Map, which is accessible year-round, aims to further bolster public interest and participation in local heritage. With features designed for visitor encouragement, users can now check-in at cultural sites using the digital map and earn badges based on their engagement. This gamification element adds a layer of excitement, encouraging more visitors to explore Tokyo’s cultural landscape.
Real-time Analysis and Future Directions
The implementation of the Platinum Map also means that the Tokyo Government can now analyze user engagement effectively. The dashboard now provides valuable insights into information dissemination and its impact, ensuring ongoing improvements can be made based on data-driven outcomes.
In line with these successes, Boldright has announced its commitment to expand the use of the Platinum Map across various public sectors in Tokyo. The vision includes fostering more profound connections with other municipalities and public institutions to address essential societal challenges using DX technologies.
Tokyo's partnership with Boldright stands as a model for integrating technology with cultural heritage management. This progressive approach not only streamlines operations but also enhances community engagement, ensuring that the treasures of the city remain accessible and appreciated by all. As they move forward, there are ambitious plans for further innovation and outreach, reaffirming Tokyo's status as a leader in embracing technology for cultural preservation.
