CPSC Calls for Fireworks Safety Ahead of July 4th Celebrations in the U.S.

CPSC Urges Fireworks Safety This Independence Day

As the United States gears up for the joyous celebration of Independence Day on July 4th, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is making a crucial appeal to the public: prioritize safety while using fireworks. With festivities around the corner, ensuring safe usage can mean the difference between a fun-filled day and potential tragedy.

According to statistics shared by the CPSC, 2024 saw a concerning 14,700 fireworks-related injuries and 11 fatalities associated with improper use and malfunctioning devices. These figures represent significant increases—up approximately 38% in deaths and 52% in injuries compared to the previous year, further emphasizing the serious risks involved with fireworks.

Alarming Trends in Fireworks-Related Incidents

In the 2024 data, about 1,700 injury cases treated in emergency rooms involved sparklers, also known as “little stars”. The majority of injuries were reported among young adults aged 25 to 44, accounting for 32%, followed by teenagers aged 15 to 24 at 24%. The most common injuries affected the hands and fingers (36%) and included burns, which were the leading cause of emergency room visits, representing nearly 37% of all incidents.

Peter Feldman, the acting chairman of the CPSC, emphasized the importance of personal accountability: “People, families, are behind these statistics; and often, the incidents can be prevented. Firework injuries don’t only occur on July 4th. We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly; safety should always come first.”

Key Fireworks Safety Guidelines

To help everyone celebrate safely this Independence Day, the CPSC recommends the following safety tips:

1. Supervise Children: Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. These items can burn at temperatures around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt certain metals.
2. Be Prepared: Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of a fire or any mishap.
3. Know the Law: Ensure that the fireworks you are using are legal in your area and only purchase consumer-grade fireworks that are labeled for use by the general public, not for professionals.
4. Avoid Substances: Never use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
5. Ignite Responsibly: Light fireworks one at a time and then step back quickly.
6. Handle with Care: If fireworks malfunction, do not attempt to relight or handle them; instead, soak them in water and dispose of them properly.
7. Read Instructions: Follow all usage instructions and warnings, and never hold fireworks in your hand unless the instructions specify that it is safe to do so.

CPSC's Ongoing Commitment to Safety

The CPSC's mission is to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products. This involves addressing safety issues associated with thousands of types of products. The costs related to consumer product-related deaths, injuries, and property damage exceed $1 trillion annually. Since its establishment over 50 years ago, the CPSC has been dedicated to enhancing product safety, contributing to a notable decline in injury rates associated with consumer goods.

Federal law strictly prohibits the sale of products subject to a recall by the CPSC or voluntary recalls conducted in consultation with the agency.
