Beijing Hosts the 13th Global Peace Forum

This week, Beijing served as the venue for the 13th Global Peace Forum, where diplomats, scholars, and political decision-makers from over 80 countries convened. Organized by Tsinghua University and the Chinese Institute of Foreign Affairs, the event took place from July 2 to July 4, emphasizing the importance of international dialogue and cooperation under the theme "Promoting Global Peace and Prosperity: Shared Responsibility, Benefits, and Achievements."

The forum is recognized as China's premier non-governmental platform for discussions on international security. It drew more than 400 participants engaging in deep conversations regarding global challenges that the world faces today. Notably, the opening ceremony on July 3 featured a speech from Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, who underscored the need to uphold international equity and justice while enhancing global governance systems.

Han outlined four key proposals aimed at fostering a united approach:

1. Learning from History: Emphasizing the importance of preserving the post-war international order and ensuring justice on a global scale.
2. Solidarity and Cooperation: Advocating for enhanced collaboration among nations to improve governance worldwide.
3. Openness: Promoting open exchange and cooperative efforts to stimulate global prosperity and development.
4. Unity in Progress: Encouraging collective action toward modernization.

Among the distinguished attendees was Qiu Yong, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee of Tsinghua University, and Li Luming, the university president and forum chairman, who delivered a warm welcome address.

The Global Peace Forum presented a unique opportunity for influential voices, including former political leaders such as Japan's ex-Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Belgium's former Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy, alongside diplomats based in China and renowned experts and scholars. Over the course of the forum, participants engaged in four plenary sessions and 18 roundtable discussions addressing pressing issues such as international economic stability, the rising influence of developing countries, and the evolving China-Europe relationship.

One of the major points of discussion involved emerging threats and the implications of artificial intelligence within armed conflicts, highlighting the forum's responsiveness to current geopolitical tensions and contemporary security dilemmas.

The forum stands as a vital venue for international security discourse, promoting mutual understanding and collective responses to pressing global challenges.
