Prime Data Centers Appoints John Bates to Enhance Power Development for AI-Driven Infrastructure
Prime Data Centers Strengthens Leadership with John Bates
Prime Data Centers, a prominent global player in the field of hyperscale and purpose-built data centers, has recently appointed John Bates as its new Executive Vice President of Development and Power. This strategic move comes as the company intensifies its focus on power strategies across its AI-ready data center portfolio, especially in light of the increasing demand for data services.
John Bates enters this role with over three decades of vast experience in renewable energy, power generation, and large-scale infrastructure development. His impressive track record includes leading initiatives that efficiently manage power across grid-connected and behind-the-meter assets. In his new position, Bates will oversee all activities related to acquisitions and development that directly pertain to power initiatives.
Nicholas Laag, the Founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers, emphasized the significance of Bates’ appointment. He stated, "Power availability and execution are central to delivering data center capacity at scale. John brings an exceptional depth across development, capital formation, and power infrastructure. His proven ability to scale complex platforms in competitive markets will be invaluable as we expand our global footprint."
Before joining Prime, Bates was the Founder and CEO of Radial Power, a company known for its distributed renewable generation offerings tailored for large-scale real estate portfolio owners. Under his leadership, Radial Power saw considerable growth, scaling its platform to encompass over 300 megawatts of operational assets and raising upwards of $500 million through various equity and debt channels.
Earlier in his career, Bates founded Starmex Energy, establishing an independent power producer platform that aligned with Mexico's Energy Transition Law. Moreover, his expertise was further honed through senior positions at companies like Sunnova Energy and NRG Energy, where he played a crucial role in growing NRG’s capacity from 5 gigawatts to an impressive 55 gigawatts by holding various executive roles across their Fossil, Nuclear, and Renewables divisions.
Bates reflected on his new role, saying, "Prime is a data center company with a disciplined approach to power and site execution. I’m eager to leverage my experience in power development and capital execution to bolster Prime’s growth and ensure that our power capabilities can keep pace with the evolving demands of AI and high-performance computing workloads."
