Discover the Awa Odori Dance in Shibuya

On May 30, 2026, the dynamic culture of Tokushima will come alive in the heart of Tokyo as the event "2026 THE AWAODORI - Prologue - Tokushima's Passion, Dancing in Shibuya" is set to dazzle attendees. This annual celebration is spearheaded by Japan Digital Broadcasting Inc. (JDS) in collaboration with Tokushima Cable Television and the Awa Odori Future Committee. The main goal of this event is to provide Tokyo residents with an immersive Awa Odori experience before the original festival held in Tokushima City each August.

The first joint hosting of the Awa Odori celebration by JDS, Tokushima Cable Television, and the Awa Odori Committee in June 2025 received a commendable response, spurring them on to enhance this year’s program at the Shibuya Stream Hall—a venue chosen for its convenience and capacity to accommodate larger audiences.

Highlights of the Event

One of the main attractions will be a special performance by the "Selected Group" of Awa Odori dancers. This elite team, chosen from prominent dancers affiliated with the Tokushima City Awa Odori Promotion Association, will present unique choreography created specifically for this event. Attendees can select from two viewing options—comfortable seated sections and an affordable standing area to enjoy the vibrant performances.

In addition, the event will host esteemed dance troupes from the Kanto region, including Tokyo's renowned Koenji Awa Odori and Minami Koshigaya Awa Odori, showcasing elaborate performances that will showcase the multifaceted charm of Awa Odori to all attendees.

JDS and Tokushima Cable Television continue to develop their regional revitalization efforts under the "satonoka Project". This initiative has led to the continuous streaming of Awa Odori performances throughout the region since 2023, combining broadcasting, reality, and telecommunications to create a unique event experience that engages viewers both online and in person.

By merging the vibrant culture of Shibuya with the traditional Awa Odori, the event aims to increase the allure of Shibuya while enhancing the promotional reach of Awa Odori in the metropolitan area, thereby attracting new fans for the Tokushima heritage.
